INT. DOC MAGOO'S
Abby and Richard sit at the counter nursing cups of coffee. Their mood with each other is awkward, but fairly pleasant.
RICHARD: It's colder in here than it is outside. You look great.
ABBY: (chuckles) Thank you. Shift work becomes me.
RICHARD: So, how are things?
ABBY: They're good.
RICHARD: Good. That's good. You seeing anyone or...
ABBY: (grins) Oh yeah. I'm breaking hearts all over town.
They both look down for a moment, then Abby speaks up.
ABBY: What do you want, X?
RICHARD: (confused) X?
ABBY: Yeah. Can I call you X? 'Cause it's almost like sexy so people might think it's short for ecstasy, or triple-X... which stands for porn, uh, now, exceot for in cartoons, where it stands for poison, which I always thought was funny, but... (looks him in the eye) What do you want?
RICHARD: Oh, look, I, um... Well, I wanted to talk to you in person so you didn't hear this through the grapevine.
ABBY: (interupts) Oh my God.
RICHARD: (confused again) What?
ABBY: (laughs a little) Are you going to jail?
RICHARD: (smiles) No.
Abby gives a little shrug, letting him finish what he's telling her.
RICHARD: Uh, I'm getting married.
Abby laughs, then raises an eyebrow.
ABBY: (echoing him) Married?
RICHARD: Yeah. You'd think I would've learned my lesson.
ABBY: I'm glad one of us did. What is she, rich?
RICHARD: Hardly. She's a teacher.
Richard smiles just thinking about her. I think it's very cute.
ABBY: Not that one you had at the museum.
RICHARD: No. No! No... Her name's Corrine. She's, uh, she's really great. She's really down to earth. I think you might even like her.
ABBY: How old is she?
RICHARD: She's 34. She has a six-year-old son, Adam. Really great kid.
ABBY: You're going to be a father?
RICHARD: Stepfather, yeah. It's kinda... hard to believe, huh?
ABBY: Yeah, uh... instant family.
RICHARD: I always wanted kids, so...
ABBY: (tries to say it gently, but a liiiittle but of anger creeps in) Since when?
RICHARD: Uh, you know, just a while. I guess we never talked about it, you know?
ABBY: And you, uh, felt that today was the day you had to tell me all about this?
RICHARD: Is today a bad day?
Abby starts to say something, then shakes her head.
ABBY: Nope.
She starts pulling her scarf back on, ready to leave.
ABBY: Um, so, what? Am I supposed to give you my blessing?
RICHARD: That's up to you.
ABBY: Well I have to get back to work.
She stands, and starts to walk toward the exit, leaving Richard at the counter. Then she turns back, evidently feeling bad about having turned snippy on him all of a sudden.
ABBY: Richard.
He turns.
ABBY: I hope that it works out this time.
RICHARD: Thanks.
She leaves.
