EXT. HOSPITAL ROOF - NIGHT
Nathan's there, hands in his pocket, looking out at the night. He seems to be symptom-free. Sirens are heard in the ambulance bay below. Elizabeth enters from the stairwell door, wearing an unzipped parka over her lab coat and scrubs.
ELIZABETH: Hey. Shirley, uh, said she saw you up here on her break almost an hour ago. Are you okay?
He holds out his hands. No tremors.
NATHAN: No symptoms. It's perfect timing, huh?
She comes And stands in front of him before she says anything else.
NATHAN: You need something?
She pulls an envelope from her pocket.
ELIZABETH: I owe it to you to give you this in person... your evaluation.
He upzips his coat, puts it in his right breast pocket, and zips his coat back up.
ELIZABETH: You're not going to open it?
NATHAN: Open it for what?
ELIZABETH: There's no middle ground with you, is there? Blind optimism or self-pity.
NATHAN: It's just the truth. It's going to cripple me.
Elizabeth sighs, but not in exasperation.
NATHAN: Just when I learn to deal with another symptom, it progresses.
ELIZABETH: What were you expecting?
NATHAN: Time. I expected time... Enough time to figure out a... (he shakes his head, not knowing how to finish that sentence) Time is going to kick my ass.
ELIZABETH: So, what, that's it? You're just going to give in?
NATHAN: Isn't that what you wanted?
ELIZABETH: No! No, I wanted you to recognize your limitations. I thought you were trying to prove something, but you probably saved that little boy's life today. You connected with his father when he was completely lost. You guided him to make the right desicion. Any idiot can suture a wound or put in a chest tube. But you have a gift, Mr. Nathan. The gift of a physician. Now it's up to you to decide if you want to share that gift, and then find a way.
She starts to head back inside. She then stops, but doesn't turn to face him.
ELIZABETH: By the way, I keep my promises. I failed you.
Then she continues back inside.
