EXT. DES MOINES STREET - OUTSIDE DINER - EVENING
"The Saddest Song" by Annie Lennox plays continues to play from the last scene, as Abby hurriedly rounds the corner to enter the diner. The diner has an "Open 24 Hours" sign in the window.
SONG: Took my breath away.
The diner has big windows down the length of it, and the camera stays outside, following Abby along as she walks to Eric's booth towards the back. We see Abby approach him and see her say (but we don't hear, because of the song) "hey."
SONG: And I'm no longer here.
Eric gets up when he sees her, and wraps her in a hug. He's looking a little worse for the wear -- scraggly beard, in need of a haircut. He's wearing a baseball cap. He's glad to see her.
ERIC: I wasn't sure you'd come. (he lets go)
ABBY: I wasn't sure you'd be here.
They sit down, across from each other. Abby's unsure of what to say next.
ABBY: What's going on?
ERIC: Uh, been travelling, uh, you know... here, there... visiting old friends, just, uh, trying to reconnect and, uh, keep in touch.
ABBY: Not with me. Not with Maggie.
Abby notices that Eric's been looking at the guy ay the booth behind them, over Abby's shoulder. Abby glances at the guy, then looks back to Eric.
ABBY: You know that guy?
ERIC: No, do you? Does he look familiar to you? He's been looking at me like he knows me.
Abby glances at the guy again -- he definitely hasn't been looking at Eric. He's just eating his fries and minding his own business. The camera angle doesn't show it, but from the way he's looking down, he's probably reading something. Abby momentarily phased by this, but hides her concern from Eric.
ABBY: (shakes her head) No.
ERIC: They all have been. I don't know. Did you notice that when you walked in? This is a weird place, isn't it?
ABBY: (nods, because there's nothing else to do) Yeah.
ERIC: I'm glad you came. I got turned around. I don't know this area very well. This is a strange part of the country.
ABBY: You about ready to get out of here?
ERIC: I need to pay for my coffee.
ABBY: Okay.
She bobs her head in the direction of the counter in a "go do that first" manner.
ERIC: I don't have any money.
