Camel

and no, I didn't get there on a camel ;-)

In June of 1997, two of my most awesome friends, Geeta and Emily, and I were studying a semester abroad in Berlin, Germany.  One day, just on a spur of the moment, and half kidding, we thought it might be fun to go visit Geeta's friend Kerry, who was studying the semester in Cairo.  Emily and I decided - only half seriously - to stop by a last-minute travel agency to see what the airline prices would be like.
At Giza

Specks in front of Pyramid
So here we are - the three spots about 300 yards in front of the pyramid.  Just to give you an idea of the scale: the first row of blocks on the bottom are about 6 feet tall.  If you look closely, you can see the people standing directly next to the pyramid in the lower left corner.

Somehow, we got really lucky and found tickets for $100 round trip to Hurghada - a resort about 6 hours south of Cairo.  After about 0.01 seconds of earnest debate, we decided to buy the tickets, and just skip the next week of classes.  2 days later, we had breakfast in Berlin, flew 5 hours to Hurghada, took a bus 6 hours to Cairo, and had supper on the Nile.  It was THE coolest thing I have EVER done.  I remember how neat it was to call home - "...uhh, hi mom. Umm, I'm in Cairo, Egypt.."  That was the most expensive phone call I've ever made - $25 for 6 minutes, (a quarter of the airfare!!) but, hey, it had to be done ;-)
