The Power of 911

By Siva Darshan

The boy band worked its magic on the mostly teeny-bopper crowd at its recent concerts, writes S.Indra Sathiabalan.

The "MTV I like ... 911 Concert" was expected, a riotous affair in which teeny-boppers came to in droves (some mummies and daddies came too) to catch their favourite boy band sing their hits and prance the stage.

Although it nowhere as riotous as 911's last show here (in Sunway Pyramid), the crowd (mostly little girls) were beside themselves in adulation for their favourite boy band. I suppose its help that the guys were pretty darn cute to begin with and have been known to give highly energised performances.

The show opened at about 8.15pm with local boy band SoulStreet singing four of its signature songs and received generous applause from an appreciative audience. This talented bunch can go places if given half the chance. It isn't everyday that you run across a local boy band you can be proud.

About 15 minutes later, Danish girl group Juice stepped in and sang songs from its Can We Get Personal Ablum?

Among the numbers they belted out were Best Days, I'lll Come Running and of course, the first single Not In Love. The girls literally had the crowd eating out their hands and set the pace for headliners 911 to follow. The girls looked sexy and the fact that they could actually sing, made them 'lethal'. Most of the hot blooded males present the night can attest to that, Juice had it and more.

In fact, they almost stole the thunder from the right under 911's nimble feet, a group Juice toured with the past. If all goes well for these girls (and it looks like it will), they just might return one day as full-fledged stars. If the truth be known, Juice proved without a doubt that they were not just another opening act. As the main act for the nght, 911 managed to a draw a big crowd.

When 911's Lee Brennan, Spike Dawbarn and Jimmy Constable finally took to the stage (lots of impatients teens around, I can tell you), their fans went into a frenzy and three boys pumped up the volume with their first number, Bodyshaking.

Subsequent songs such as How Do You Want Me To Love You, All I Want Is You, Boogie Nights, Party Prople...Friday Night and The Day We Find Love were also well received. Throughout the show you could find hear screams of "I Love You" and fans singing along. The guys put on a great show with the energetic dancing and gyrating that left the fans asking for more.

Of course, for these teeny-boppers having 911 so close and yet so far can a bit too much at times. Some cried and some just screamed hysterically. The power of 911!

Overall, the concert was well organised but some felt the long wait for the main act was a bit too much. The opening act were commendable but most of 911 fans only came for their idols, they didn't seem to appreciate these other talents who sang their hearts out that night.
