DUÍLIO GALLI

BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST

Part of the biographical notes bellow was taken from LARISSA FERNANDA CAMPREGHER’s article in UNIARA’s – Journalism course at UNIVERSITY OF ARARAQUARA - website".

Duílio Galli, 72, is a self-taught painter born in the city of São Carlos, Brazil, but a ‘citizen of Ibitinga city’ in his soul. This plastic artist’s portfolio includes over 1400 works.

Beside his career as a painter, Duilio has also been a famous motorcycle racer. During his youth, back in the 50’s, Duilio has won the Sao Paulo Championship in 1956, racing for the Centauro Motor Club, among other several prizes during his racing years.

Duilio won the first motorcycle race broadcast live by the Brazilian television, where the second place was won by the legendary Luiz Latorre. “-In those times”, says Duilio, “Emerson Fittipaldi and his younger brother Wilsinho Fittipaldi were still just young brats, and would “snoop” in every bike resting in the paddock. That is the origin of Emerson’s nickname, “Rato” (rat).

Mr. Galli’s talent towards plastic arts has being nurtured since his childhood, through his constant involvement with various forms of art, like painting, poetry, drawings and written texts.

A constant in his work ever since is the favoring of the underprivileged, the battered minorities, such as the black people, the northeastern Brazilians constantly fleeing from the drought, the native Indians and industry workers, emphasizing the social and political aspects of their lives.

Duílio has had a great influence from the famous Brazilian painter TARCILA DO AMARAL, who tutored him from her 70th to 76th anniversary. It was Tarcila who oriented him on how to paint, what kinds of paint to use, but mostly encouraging him to paint without losing the essence of his drawings.

Duílio tells us that she constantly repeated one remark: “- If you study at the Fine Arts Academy, you will learn to paint within two months, and then take 20 years to freed yourself from their styles; If, on the contrary, you study by yourself, it will take you 20 years to learn, but when you finally accomplish this, your style will be already formed as well”.

It is Duilio’s uncomplicated way of expressing himself that leads him to portray himself as a countryside painter.
