Notes for JOHN B. RUGGLES:

John & Elizabeth lived in Lewis, Mason & Fleming counties in KY. They lived in what is now W.VA and MD. He was the first Ruggles to pay taxes in Mason/Lewis Co Ky 1793. His will was dated 9/10/1822 (actual date of death not known) in which he left everything to his wife, Betsy. He died in Miami/Shelby Co., Oh.

According to Rev. James S. Ruggles' letters of 1926-1930 he had to be a brother to William Ruggles born probably in the 1750 who was married to Lucy. Rev. James S. Ruggles states that he had a cousin in Tollesboro whos names was W.H. Ruggles. The only w.H. Ruggles there in those years was a William H. and Harriett Hisey, son to Jermiah, Grandson to Thomas P. and Great Grandson to this John. Having gone through the Ruggles genealogy by Henry Stoddard Ruggles, could not find any John, James or Benjamin Ruggles that could have come to KY. This could be the same John born Dedham, Mass 9/17/1752, died 9/22/1821. He paid taxes in Fleming co Ky 1800 and 1810. His Grandson,William H.L. Ruggles in his write up states that he and Elizabeth were born in Richland Co., Oh.

1810 cen Lewis Co.,Ky 1m 0-10, 2m 16-16, 1 f 16-26. 1820 Shelbyco. Oh 2m 0-10, 2m 10-16, 2m 16-18, 1 m 45+, 1 F 0-10, 2F 10-16, 1F 45+.

He last paid taxes in Lewis Co., Ky in 1808. At that time Thomas started paying taxes on the same land and same acreage on Cabin Creek near Joseph Fitch.

Date of death unknown - will was dated 10/9/1812, and her estate was probated thereafter and the children were named. This families records are in both Shelby and Miami Co., Oh. Birth place for both Elizabeth and husband John are from son George 1880 cen record. Her name may have been Brimer per Al Stude. Lee Ruggles gives her name as Plumer. I don't know where he got this name from.

There were 3 Thomas Ruggles in Mason/Lewis Co., Ky. in the early years.

One started paying taxes in 1800 and was on the 1790 census. Another Thomas was born in 1790 and went to Indiana and the third Thomas was born 1785 and stayed in KY. since a male had to be 21 years old before paying taxes in KY that would make the oldest Thomas born in 1769 or before John's children were born in 1788, 1789, etc. We have proved the father of the Thomas that went to Indiana. That leaves the Thomas born 1785 as John's son. There were two land grans in Lewis Co. for Thomas in 1826 on Kenniconick Creek.

I Rachel Buzzard believing in Almighty God and acknowledged that life is uncertain. It become me to dispose of all my property both personal and real to take effect after my death. I therefore declare publish and subscribe this my last Will & Testament trusting to be saved trought the atoning of Jesus Christ.

First, I hereby order that after my death & my burial, I wish my funeral expenses and the erection at my grave a tomb. Stone suitable to my curcumstances in life.

Secondly, after my death and burial, I order all my personal property and all my realestate to be sold and the proceeds after all expenses are paid as above requested to be distributed Equally among all my children, Namely George Buzzard, John Buzzard, Jesse Buzzard, Robert Buzzard, Elizabeth Pinkerton, Rachel Livinia Voirs and to the children of Sarah Couch one share being their mothers share who is now deceased, and Henry Buzzard one hare and in case of any of my children now living should die leaving children living at my death, the children so living shall inherit their parents share as here in bequeathed. Thirdly, I hereby appoint George Buzzard Executor of this my last will and testament to sell all of my personal property and all my real estate, being sixty acres mor or less situated in Wayne Township Huntington County and State of Indiana to pay funeral expenses and tombstone as provided for herein in first request, and divide among my heirs the proceeds remaining after all expenses as herein bequeathed in the second paragraph. Page 225, Legislative acts in favor of the county, Chapter 874 is the charter of the Vanceburg and Concord Turnpike Road Company. The incorporators are L.B. Baird, John Moore, Jon Monteith, Thos. J. Bruce, F.M. Carr, Lewis B. Rugles, and L.A. Grimes. This road is to run from Vanceburg, down the Ohio River, to Concord. Two and one-half miles of it have recently been built, from Vanceburg to Quick's Run Creek.

Ruggles, Eliza Mary Everat (sic) was born in Lewis Co., KY 2/6/1848. Was married to James Ruggles 11/20/1867, died at her home near Winfield, 2/7/1903. Eight children were born to Brother and Sister Ruggles, four of whom died in childhood. Sister Ruggles was converted in 1878, joined the M.E. church South and has lived a consistent Christian ever since. The remains were laid to rest in the Rose Valley Cemetery. Funeral services were had at her home.

Establishes the Vanceburg Deposit Bank, and appoints Geo. M. Thomas, Socrates Ruggles, Wm. M. Bireley, A.H. Parker, and W.C. Halbert commissioners to open books and receive subscriptions to the capital stock of said bank, which is $25,000. The stock was subscribed, and the bank established and is in good condition and all O.K.

The Deposit Bank at Vanceburg, Lewis Co. KY was incorporated in 1887, with a captial stock of $25,000., but that amount ws reduced to $15,000. in 1900. Although organized in 1887 the bank did not begin to do business until 1889. The first officers and directors who were directly responsible for the establishment of the bank were as follows: Socrates Ruggles, president; A.H. Parker, cashier; and .S. Riley, P.P. Parker and T.S. Clark, directors. In 1911 the deposits amounted to $110,000.; surplus and undivided profits, $6,000.; realestate, $3,000.; dividend, 5% semi-annually.

Dr. Charles A. Ruggles is a man of interesting experience, has lived in Stafford many years, and is proprietor of the Ruggles Sanitarium there. The interest and charm of the wild led him to travel in may states and in distant countries, and he know intimately the frontier life of former times.

He is of an old English family that came to America in colonial times and was forn in Jefferson County, Iowa, May 25, 1854. His father was Thomas W. Ruggles, born in Kentucky in 1825 (?), whose brother, Gen. George B. Ruggles, served forty-seven years in the United States Army. In 1839 the parents of Thomas W. Ruggles moved to Iowa, which was then a territory, and Thomas W. grew up and married in Jefferson County.

Charles A. Ruggles attended public schools in Fairfield, Iowa, graduating from high school. In 1870, at the age of 16, he started for California with a drobe of cattle from Ohaha, Neb., and went over the plains, and became acquainted enroute with William Cody, everywhere kown as "Buffalo Bill". He has himself long borne the sobriquet of "Modoc Charlie", a title given him by Californians for his part in supressing an uprising of Modoc Indians in that state. He carries two scars from bullet wounds received in early days, one on a finger and the other on his left cheek. In 1874 he returned to Jefferson Co., Iowa and in 1875 married. He had in the meantime taken up the study of medicine, and when he married he began its practice in Jefferson County. In 1878 he went to Comanche Pool, Comanche County, Knasas, and helped organize that county. During 1881 he spent 3 months at Phoenix, AZ, andhad 3 years of varied experience in Old Mexico. For 5 years he practiced medicine at San Francisco and then folowed a leisurely tour and sojourn in Washington, Oregon, Utah and Idaho, and in 1896 he settled permanently in Stafford, Kansas. In 1897 he built a modern hospital or sanitarium the larges in Western Kansas, with a capacity for 50 beds. Patients to this institution have come from Kansas, Oklahoma, Penn., West Virg. and many other states. He specializes in tchronic diseases and has perfected some remedies which are sold all over the world, even in So. Africa. Dr. Ruggles has served as coroner of Stafford County. He is a member of the State and American Medical Associations, is a former memeber of the Modern Woodmen of America, and in politics is a Republican. He is a modest farmer.
