Acle Bridge, River Bure
The bridge is the only one between Wroxham and Yarmouth, the old stone bridge was replaced about 1930. The old bridge was a favourite place for hanging criminals and locals used to say it was haunted with the ghosts hanging from it until it was replaced by the new concrete one.
Today there is still a good pub and restaurant there, Acle is about a mile by road from the bridge.
There are good moorings although a charge is made for overnight, water and other facilities are available from two boatyards.
1913
The old stone bridge, a Wherry with mast lowered has just passed under coming up river from Yarmouth. To the right can be seen the Bridge Inn which is still there but the view is now obscured by 2 boatyards.
1959
The concrete bridge built about 1930, Acle Bridge Stores can be seen to the left of the picture. The business was started by a Mr Curtis in the 1920's to supply provisions to holiday makers, in 1946 he handed the business over to his son who lived nearby. I can remember his son Gordon was of uncertain temperament, once when I was glancing through a book I was thinking of purchasing he told me it was not a reading library! Needless to say I left without buying. The shop is still there but a little bigger, it was taken over by his daughter and her husband in 1983.
1904
Around half a mile downstream from the bridge stood Acle drainage mill, this art card depicts it in moonlight with the marshes in flood.
