Burgh St Peter, River Waveney

The site was once a Roman settlement ( Gariononum ) and Roman bricks can be found in the church walls.

Because it is not far from Oulton Broad it was a popular visiting place for holiday makers in Edwardian times. Today there are good moorings and facilities at the Waveney River Centre. There are excellent views over the Waveney valley from the Leisure Centre.

Burgh St Peter Church, Lowestoft. pm1909

1909

The oldest part of St. Mary's Church dates back to c1200 although the roof is 15th century. The strange tower that looks like a Ziggerat Temple from Mesopotania ( Iraq ) is actually a Mausoleum erected by the first Rector Samuel Boycott in 1793 although the base dates to the 16th century. Samuel's brother Charles Boycott became a land agent in County Mayo Ireland in the 1880's, his efforts to enforce rent rises on the tennants led to him being shunned by everyone, thereby adding the term ' Boycott ' to the dictionary. He is buried near the church in the graveyard.
