Ludham Staithe, River Thurne

About one and a half miles up river on the Thurne from its mouth on the Bure is Womack Dyke which extends a mile to what used to be Womack Broad but is now a collection of channels called Womack Water. Here moorings can be had at Ludham Staithe, the moorings are very popular and boats cram stern on to the staithe where water, rubbish disposal and toilets are available, there are also two small shops for provisions and gifts, a charge is made for mooring overnight.

The staithe is well kept with a Green and picnic tables provided, a walk of about a mile takes you to Ludham village where there is a supermarket, a few shops and a pub. The church of St Catherine contains a screen dated 1493, a 15th century nave and is the largest church in the district apart from St Nicolas in Yarmouth. Ludham was once important in the malt trade and an old malt house can be seen near the staithe.

14 miles upstream on the River Bure from Great Yarmouth and 11 miles downstream from Wroxham is the mouth of the River Thurne which rises at Horsey and Somerton and flows into the River Bure. The wide expanse of water makes it ideal for sailing and up until the 1960's Regatta Weeks were held, since yacht racing became more popular the clubs now hold meetings over a weekend or two or three days and the Regatta Weeks have moved to Wroxham and Horning.

Ludham Staithe and Womack Water very much different than today where boats and a boatyard cram every orifice. The tiny cruiser under way is ' Petit Barsac ' a class of boats hiring from Bondon's, South Walsham. Pam and I actually hired one for a week around 1972, there was just room to make up the double bunk in the front, a toilet, wash basin, cooker and that was it! The small engine made it hard going against the tide but it was great fun. The boat moored in the front of the picture is ' Gliding Stream 5 '.
