The site of one of the many shipyards that lined the river bank and built the Whitby colliers such as the Endeavour ( originally called The Earl of Pembroke ) in which Captain Cook sailed on his voyage of discovery to the South Seas and Australia. All four ships that Cook used on his three voyages were Whitby built colliers.
