You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This by Lindsey
Vice Foreign Minister Relena Darlain/Peacecraft looked over the vast
number of diplomatic speakers and world leaders. //Hmm...there's
Hunt...Gilbert...Johnson...Wood...even Une! But...where in the world
is Duo?//
A hand on her arm pulling her back into an alcove in the wall ALMOST
caused her to let out a most undignified squeak, but when she heard
his rich laugh, filled with mirth, she stopped, and spun around. "DUO
MAXWELL! WHAT DO YOU CALL YOURSELF DOING?!" She asked rather loudly
in mock reproach.
Duo laughed again, causing her to break out into a grin. "Oh, nothin'
much, Princess. Just checkin' out these boring diplomats...boy, I
tell ya, they sure are lively, aren't they?" He glanced out into the
crowd. Most of them were dancing, while the others were sipping wine
and chatting. "What a party, eh?"
Relena caught the sarcasm and agreed. "Yes, they are very boring
indeed." She glanced up at him. "I was wondering where you were."
"Oh, really? Didn't figure you'd miss me. Figured you'd be havin' the
time of your life out here!" //Nobody ever seems to miss me
anyway...nobody's ever cared that much, I don't think...no different
now, ne Maxwell?//
"Oh, but I did miss you." //More than you'll ever know...//
His eyes met hers. They were questioning, and she lowered her gaze
before he could read too deep into it.
//Oh, 'Lena...why won't you let me see what you feel, huh? Is it
because you're scared of gettin' hurt again? Because, if that's the
case, I'm scared, too. Remember, the same person hurt the both of us.
Damn you Heero...you bastard. Damn you to Hell.//
Duo had become depressed a few months back, because Heero had left
him, and Duo had truly loved that idiot. Thing was...so did Relena.
And Heero never gave her more than a second glance. And when Heero
left, he didn't tell anyone. No trace of him was even found. //Can't
believe I thought we shared somethin' more than sex...guess that's
Mr. Perfect for you.//
It was like he had walked out on Duo and Relena both.
However, it didn't seem to faze Relena all that much. Sure, she had
been in love with him, and it hurt, but he had never returned her
feelings. He had never really returned Duo's either, much to his
displeasure.
And after he had left, Relena felt genuinely sorry for Duo, and tried
to help him out as best as she could. Thus, his job as her Chief of
Security.
"Duo?"
"Huh?" Duo broke out of his reverie with a slight shake of his head
and looked down at her.
"What were you thinking about?"
He grinned to ward of her concern. "Nothin' important 'Lena. Nothin'
at all to worry about."
"You're thinking about Heero again." She stated softly, turning her
head away.
Her ability to read his thoughts amazed him. "How did you know that?"
"You always get that look in your eyes when you're thinking of him.
You know...that melancholy look."
"I'm sorry, Lena...it's just that, well, when I think of him...a
little stab of pain comes back to haunt me, and..."
"It's okay. I understand. You don't have to explain it to me." Her
hand reached for his slightly larger one, and squeezed
tightly. "Would you like to sit down and talk?"
Duo's eyes roamed over the crowd once more. //Oh, no Lena...I have a
much better idea.// He smiled to himself mentally, and took a deep
bow. "Would you like to dance, Princess?"
She laughed softly and answered "Why I'd be delighted!"
Still holding her hand, he led her to the floor, and they mixed in
with the dancing crowd.
"I didn't know you could waltz, Duo."
"Didn't know I could tell a waltz from a watermelon, ne 'Lena?" He
chuckled.
"Truthfully, no." She answered his chuckle with a laugh of her
own. "You have many talents."
"That comes in handy."
"I'm sure it does."
The music changed from a waltz to a slower tempo. Duo recognized it
as a slow dance...and the tempo itself was practically
screaming "ROMANCE!!!!"
The moment that your lips touched mine
//Hoo, boy...what do I do now?!// "Do you wanna sit down now 'Lena,
or..."
"No. Let's keep dancing." She lifted her arms to twine them around
his neck and leaned her head against his shoulder. "Keep dancing..."
His arms found her waist, and he held her securely against him,
burying his face in her hair and inhailing the scent of
lilacs. //Heaven...Oh, yes...this is Heaven...//
She melted against him and felt his arms tighten slightly. //This
feels good...Never felt like this before...not about anyone...not
even Heero...//
//This song is getting me to thinkin'...and it's not good when I
think...always mess up that way// He tried to focus on something
other than her body pressed against his, but the effort was in
vain. //Lena...if you knew how much I love you, you wouldn't be
dancing with me. Because everyone I love leaves...always.//
She lifted her head and gazed into his eyes. "Duo..."
Warning signs flashed in his mind. //Danger! Danger!//
She raised on her tiptoes, and pressed her lips very gently against
his. //Please tell me I've done the right thing...//
He threw caution to the wind, and responded in kind; lifting her off
the ground slightly, he explored her mouth with his tongue.
Duo smiled mentally at the words of the song. //Get lost? I'm already
lost...and I'm already in love.// But, one thing did occur to
him, //You shouldn't kiss me like this...Unless you mean it like
that...how do you mean it, 'Lena?// Regretfully, he pulled his mouth
away from hers and stared into her eyes.
The hurt look she gave him stabbed through his heart.
"What's wrong?" //I shouldn't have done that...I shouldn't have. Now
he's going to say that was a mistake...//
"You didn't do anything wrong, believe me." He sighed. "'Lena, before
we get too deep in this, I need to know how you feel about...me."
She smiled. "Duo, don't you know? Haven't you always known? I love
you. I've loved you for quite some time now..."
He nearly fell over. "You do?"
"Yes." She met his eyes again. "And I won't ever leave."
"'Lena...you have no idea how long I've...ahh, damn! I love you too!"
he pulled her against him again and hugged her tightly. "I love you
too..."
And their kiss started all over again, even more passionate than
their first, igniting fires within both of them. Before things could
get too heavy, Duo pulled away and whispered into her ear
huskily, "We better take this elsewhere. What do you think about
that, Princess?"
She nodded, and kissed him briefly before grabbing his hand and
walking determinably toward the stairs. "They won't notice our
absence, I'm sure. And since everyone is down here, we have the
entire upstiars completely to ourselves." She stopped at the foot of
the stairs and turned around to look at him, mischievousness glinting
in her blue eyes.
"Whoo...that sounds good." He grinned. "Well, 'Lena...we've rescued
each other from those boring diplomats, eh?"
"Seems that we have." She reached up on tiptoes again and
whispered "I can promise you that I'll be more interesting than the
diplomats." Her voice was teasing, and driving Duo positively mad.
He gathered her up into his arms and began to trek upstairs.
