Intro

Location: Intro; Inside The Chopper.

Scene: Soldiers are being transported in the chopper with the code name Goose 7. You can hear in the background the radio conversation between the Head Quarters (HQ), the pilots in the choppers the Goose 7 and Goose 3 (G7, G3) and probably also with another radar station (W6).

HQ: OK Goose 7. Proceed to sector 112LZ and rendezvous with Alfa Bravo Tango. Over!

G7: Copy that HQ.

Soldiers are joking and discussing the upcoming mission that appears at first glance to be a babysitting job.

Soldier Tower: Hey man where the hell are we anyway?

Soldier Jackson: Well a pilot thought we were headin’ to your mother’s house, heh. So far this all looks familiar.

Soldier Tower: It is real cute Jackson.

Soldier Jackson: Anytime, anywhere!

Soldier Tower: Hey man you smell that?

Soldier Jackson: Smell what?

Soldier Tower: Smells like.. smells like another babysittin’ job to me man!

Soldier Jackson: Hehe, no shit man!

Soldier #3: Babysittin’ job my ass! This has trainin’ mission written all over it. Why else would they have kept our orders from us for so long, ha?

Soldier Tower: Yeah, what the hell is that all about? Throwin’ our asses in this hunk and junk and not even tellin’ us where we’re goin’ in for man.

Sergeant: Do you have a problem Private? I will give you your orders when we have reach the LZ. You’ve got that soldier?!

Soldier Tower: Sir! Yes sir!

Soldier Jackson: Well I don’t really give a damn what we’re going in for! Long as I get to kill me somethin’.

Soldier #3: I heard that.

G7: Watch your vector Goose 3, it’s getting little tight in here.

G3: Roger that, we copy.

Soldier Tower: Man, if this is another ”Search and Rescue” operation I’m gonna be pissed.

Soldier Jackson: Yeah I’m gonna be pissed too when I gotta search and rescue your sorry ass.

G7: Anyone out there got a good view at LZ?

W6: Negative Goose 7. I can too see an activity up there, but I can’t tell what it is.

Soldier Tower: Hey Shephard! I think Jackson he has got the hots for you.

Soldier Jackson: Screw you Tower!

Soldier #4: Hey you sleepin’ over there? You want me to fluff your pillow for ya? What the hell kind of mission is this anyway? We didn’t even get a briefing before take-off!

In the next moment the chopper the Goose 3 is being attack. Sergeant starts to give you the last minute briefing.

Sergeant: OK, listen up people! We have an extremely hostile situation on our hand.

G7: Holy shit! Goose 3 down! Goose 3 down!

HQ: What the hell is going on out there?

As the chopper the ”Goose 3” has been attacked and consequently exploded, also your chopper has been attacked and sergeant meets his bad end along with you and your team.

W6: Watch it Goose 7, you’ve got something coming up on you..

Sergeant: Recon has not been able to determine the amount of our opposition, so let’s keep this tight. Your mission is to get.. Shit! Goddamn it!

As you loose consciousness you regain it briefly again, to see a futile fight with aliens near the crashed chopper, then the second time when a Medic has brought you into shelter. The Medic is trying to warn the Engineer of an alien, who strikes him down with the electric beam as he runs into the back.

Medic: Get down!

01 - Welcome To Black Mesa

Location: Welcome To Black Mesa; After Waking Up In The Laboratory.

Scene: Scientist is trying to save a soldier’s life performing the CPR and then talks to you. He directs you to the radio to call for help.

Scientist: ..Three.. Four.. Five.. One.. Two..

Getting more desperate, breathing heavily.

Scientist: ..Three.. Four.. Five..

Upon seeing you he gets up and talks to you

Scientist: Oh, you’ve woken up! Corporal Shephard, is it? I’ve red the tag on your uniform. I’m glad to see my life saving efforts weren’t in vain. I can’t say the same for him. I’m afraid you have been through a serious accident. Most of your.. friends didn’t make it. I was hoping that you soldiers had come to rescue us, but now it seems we are all in the same.. situation. I think I saw a radio near the crash site where I found you. Perhaps you can go there and radio for help.

Scientist points at the dead or wounded soldiers and continues.

Scientist: I’m afraid these troops aren’t going to make it. I hope you have better luck out there or I fear none of us will get through this alive.

Location: Welcome To Black Mesa; Glass Wall Corridor.

Scene: Two scientists are passing by, carrying a wounded soldier on the stretcher.

Scientist #1: I’d give my right hemisphere for a few hours of sleep.

Scientist #2: Do you recall any of those emergency survival procedures?

Location: Welcome To Black Mesa; Lab Airlock.

Scene: Otis, the chubby security guard kills a zombie and turns you away from airlock door when you haven’t put on your PCV vest.

Otis: Sorry, Shephard, sir uh. See now I was told not to open this door for ya, until you agree to help us. Besides, you wouldn’t wanna go out there without your armor vest anyway. I-I left it for you, where the other soldiers are getting treated. Just ah, you know come on back here when you’ve found it.

Location: Welcome To Black Mesa; Lab With Alien Specimens.

Scene: One of the scientists is poking with a stick into a head crab in a specimen container and the second is observing the mutated soldiers with somehow morbid admiration and curiosity.

Scientist #1: These crab creatures have a unique parasitic strategy, don’t you think?

Scientist #2: Have you ever seen such a magnificent species? These crabs can completely control their hosts’ nerves system. Can you imagine what the next stage of mutation looks like?

Location: Welcome To Black Mesa; Lab Airlock.

Scene: Once you’ve put on your PCV vest, Otis opens the security door for you and says.

Otis: Ok Shephard, I see you found your power vest, that should keep you save out there. See now I’ve heard rumors, that you troops may not actually be here to rescue us. Just don’t forget about us out there! Ready? Ok, I’ll let you through now.

As he is passing you through the door.

Otis: Good luck sir!

Otis: Personally, I think if we could find more soldiers like you, we make Canada to say ”OK”.

Location: Welcome To Black Mesa; The Crash Site.

Scene: Near the crashed chopper you discover the radio and receive new orders, you can hardly hear due the heavy gun fire and war roar from the other end of the wire.

Radio voice: Shephard you’re alive! Listen, we’ve been cut up pretty bad and orders are coming down to ”Pull Out”. Repeat! Pull Out! Apparently they have other plans with Black Mesa now. If you can make your way through the transit system you can probably reach the surface where we are pulling out. Good Luck! Over.

Then the orders get more specified, before the contact abruptly breaks.

Radio voice: Go through the transit system to the extraction point! Go no-ahhhh...

02 - ”We Are Pulling Out”

Location: ”We Are Pulling Out”; The Train Ride.

Scene: You will use once again the famous train from the Half Life but this time the ride is little bit more bumpy and also the tape recording seems to be all warped. The speed alters constantly, there are many electric spark sounds and disturbances. This is only a rough transcription of it.

Train voice: This train is i-i-i-i-inbound (sparks) from (sparks) from Sector C (sparks).. please keep your limbs in-in-in-inside the train at aaall times.

Location: ”We Are Pulling Out”; The Transit System Station.

Scene: You encounter the chubby security guard, who currently has his hand stuck in a chocolate bars vending machine.

Otis: Hmmm! Candy.

Otis: Stupid machines! Why don’t these ever seem to work?

Otis: Hey ya, you wouldn’t have a quarter I can borrow, would ya?

Location: ”We Are Pulling Out”; Upstairs Over The Train Station.

Scene: Upstairs, you’ll come to a locked door. Through a window you’ll see Barney and Scientist chatting, who then get a rude surprise, an unknown species of alien monster.

Barney: Have you seen the new IG88?

Scientist: No I haven’t, but a friend of mine..

Barney: What the he.. what is that Doc?

Scientist: I don’t know! I’ve never seen that species before!

Barney makes a brave but a completely hopeless attack, the alien eventually kills him.

Barney: It’s OK sir, I can take him!

When he gets hit (slightly).

Barney: Took a little damage, but I can make it.

When he gets hit (severely).

Barney: Well I.. I got hit pretty hard.

As the monster grabs the scientist and teleports him away:

Scientist: No! I don’t wanna die!

Otis feels sorry for his colleagues.

Otis: Those poor bastards.

Location: ”We Are Pulling Out”; The Room With Locked Scientist.

Scene: Break the glass to meet a very frightened scientist inside the next room. While you’re doing that, Otis will unlock a closet with MP5 grenades and ammo.

Scientist: Oh no. You are one of the.. them. Can’t we just get along?

Radio voice: All units, retreat to the rally point. I’d say, retreat to the rally point (Medic!). Orders have been changed, we are pulling out. The safety (Rescue me please!) of any units left behind can not be guaranteed.

Location: ”We Are Pulling Out”; Commander’s Center.

Scene: Your commander is sitting behind the table, giving orders over the radio (the very same as what you heard in the end of ”Surface Tension”).

Commander: Come in, Cooper. Do you copy? Forget about Freeman. We’re abandoning the base. If you have any last bomb targets, mark them on the tactical map. Otherwise, get the hell out of there. Repeat, we are pulling out and commencing air strikes. Give us targets or get below!

Once he finishes, he talks to you and tells you to go to the hangar.

Commander: Shephard, you’ve made it. I take it you didn’t find Freeman. Forget it Corporal. We are puling out. The air strike has started. Get to the hanger while we await evac!

When you hesitate, he keeps ordering you to get to the hangar.

Commander: I said, get to the hangar Shephard, that is an order!

Location: ”We Are Pulling Out”; The Supply Room.

Scene: The military guy harasses the scientist.

Military Guy: Where is Freeman? We don’t have time to mess around here!

Scientist: You’ve got to believe me, Freeman could be anywhere.

Military Guy: I’m not lettin’ you go until you talk!

03 - Missing In Action

Location: Missing In Action; Garage Area.

Scene: Near an army truck is a dying marine, who has a few final words of warning for you.

Dying Marine: You’ve got the get out here. Listen to me Shephard, those things.. tho.. kill all of us.. (death sound)

Location: Missing In Action; Garage Area.

Scene: Near an elevator shaft you meet a scientist barricaded behind a table, rather arrogant, considering circumstances.

Scientist: I don’t know what’s worse? You soldiers under orders to silence the facility or these wild aliens.

Location: Missing In Action; Office Floor.

Scene: In the room under the hole in floor, where you’ll find yet another frightened scientist.

Scientist: When all the fighting started I hid myself here. I don’t think any of them above have survived.

Location: Missing In Action; Office Floor.

Scene: In the room with two locked doors you will hear soldiers nearby. Use the radio in the room, and an engineer and a soldier will promptly blow up one of the doors to reach you.

Radio voice: Corporal Shephard, we’ve been left behind as well. We are onto your position now. Stand back from the maintenance door, we’re gonna blow it!

Location: Missing In Action; Lobby.

Scene: Marines are discussing the bleak situation.

Marine #1: Looks like somebody really screwed up Corporal! Seems the Brass bit off more than they can chew.

Marine #2: Yeah well forget about Freeman! We got to save our own asses.

Marine #1: You with us Corporal?

04 - Friendly Fire

Radio Voice: Mayday! Mayday! Anyone copy? This is Tango Charlie.. (static disturbances).. and we are under attach. Repeat! Black Operators.. (static noise disturbances).. immediately! Over!

Location: Friendly Fire; Outside The Hangar.

Scene: You meet a Medic with a plan.

Medic: Shephard what the hell were you doing down there? Listen, we need to get our asses down to the extraction point near Lambda sector. With any luck we’ll even get a shot at Freeman on our way out. Now this transit system should take us there but the door is sealed up pretty tight. Jeez, where is an engineer when you need one?

Location: Friendly Fire; Hangar Area.

Scene: Climb out of a vent, and when you turn the corner, watch and listen to the two Black Ops talk about how they want to simply ”deliver the package and get out of here”.

Black Ops assassin #1: Why do we always have to clean up a mess the Grunts can’t handle?

Black Ops assassin #2: Tell me about it. I just wanna deliver the package and get out of here.

Black Ops assassin #1: Yeah. Sooner or later the Grunts are gonna figure it out.

Location: Friendly Fire; Hangar Area.

Scene: Once you’ve cleared out all the Black Ops, raise one of the garage doors to reveal a badly hurt Engineer.

Engineer: Corporal, I don’t think I’m gonna make it. I need a Medic.. bad..

When you bring the Medic to the Engineer.

Medic: Don’t worry soldier, I’ll have you fixed up in no time.

When Medic healed the Engineer.

Engineer: Thanks Doc!

Location: Friendly Fire; Corridors To The Transit System.

Scene: In the corridors behind the blowtorched door you’ll meet two more soldiers, one wielding an M-249 machinegun and another wearing a gas mask. The two soldiers are very nervous, and are looking for a transit car.

Soldier #1: Corporal what the hell is going on here? Nobody told us about Black Operations in the mission briefing.

Soldier #2: Yea I mean we are all on the same team, right? Right!?

Soldier #1: I’m not sure what their mission is, but we need to keep moving. There’s gotta be a transit car somewhere on these tracks.

Otis: I’m not sure I can trust you, but I don’t know what else to do at this point. If you make it out of here, don’t forget me!

05 - We Are Not Alone

Location: We Are Not Alone; Corridor.

Scene: In the corridors behind the metal door you can hear the scientist giving Freeman the last minute encouragement, before he jumps into the teleportation portal.

Scientist: It’s ready! You must go! Now!

If player delays opening the metal door:

Scientist: Hurry up, Freeman, I can’t keep it open forever!

When the bridge over the teleportation platform crushes:

Scientist: Oh Dear!

Scientist: Put that thing down! Why must you security guards always insist on playing with our prototypes?

Otis: Huh! What’s this? Some sort of transporter gun?

Scientist: Be careful! No, not again!

06 - Crush Depth

Location: Crush Depth; Underwater Lab.

Scene: A scientist is trapped in an underwater tank and asks you over the intercom to teleport him back.

Scientist: I’m afraid I’ve trapped myself here to escape those beasts. Would you be so kind as to operate that transporter.

When you teleport him back into the lab.

Scientist: Thank you for releasing me. I can help you access any security area in this lab.

Dying Marine: Don’t go in there Corporal, that.. monster.. wiped out my squad.. (death sound)

07 - Vicarious Reality

Location: Vicarious Reality; Barnacle Observation Lab.

Scene: As you push the button in front of the observation glass a hologram of a scientist will appear. He’ll explain that they’ve devised a grapple out of a barnacle.

Hologram of a Scientist: Ah, yes Walter! We were finally able to successfully detach one of the barnacle creatures from it’s point of gestation. As before we were still only able to caress the creature into latching onto organic materials. Unfortunately, the Administrator has called me down to the Anomalous material lab this morning for an important experiment, so I don’t have any time to further my analysis. Take specimen number 1176 and log anything else you can find.

Location: Vicarious Reality; Small Room With Radio.

Scene: When you listen to the message on a radio you’ll hear a really high pitch battle, screams and gun fire.

Radio Voice: X Ray Zulu are you there? We need back up in the waste sector. Some sort of worm creature. Tower and Eddy is down and I’ve lost contact with the rest of the squad. We need backup now! Now! Damn it! Now!

08 - Pit Worm’s Nest

09 - Foxtrot Uniform

Location: Foxtrot Uniform; Snipers Area.

Scene: Two friendly troopers, who are having problems with the snipers in the next area are glad to see you and suggest a surprising attack.

Soldier 1: Hey man, good to see ya! Whoa! I can’t believe you made it pass those messed freaks.

Soldier 2: Those snipers have pinned us down here pretty good. We tried making a brake-trough, but they know we are here. They’re just waitin’ for their shots and those bastards are patient.

Soldier 1: Yea I’d love to turn the table on those guys. Get my hands on one of those rifles, show them a thing or two about patience.

Soldier 1: Hey, with you here now we have the element of surprise on our site. They’re not expecting three of us, he-he-he.

Location: Foxtrot Uniform; Troopers Hiding Place .

Scene: Stand back while the engineer blowtorches the grate to allow you out. Once you climb up, listen to the Engineer as he tells you about the aliens outside, and some standoff at the dam up ahead. At your disposal you now have a soldier, an engineer, and a medic.

Engineer: It’s Shephard! Hey stand back and I’ll cut it. We gonna need your help.

Engineer: Shephard oh man! We thought you might evac already.

Engineer: It’s good to see you Sir. It’s a real mess out there. I mean these.. things are coming out of the damn walls. Ain’t a way around them either.. they just keep coming.

Engineer: We may just have enough fire power to push through now. The very least we can give it our best shot.

Engineer: I heard about some kind of big standoff at the damn up ahead. I say we make our break forth now. It ain’t gonna get any better that’s for sure. And I bet they could use our help.

10 - ”The Package”

Location: ”The Package”; Sandy Hill.

Scene: You’ll reach two soldiers who are very anxious about the situation at hand. Listen to their story, and follow them as they run off.

Soldier: Shephard! I don’t know what those Black Ops are up to.. it doesn’t involve getting us out of here alive. We’ve got no choice but to fight our way out!

Soldier: Let’s go!

Location: ”The Package”; Ordinance Storage Facility.

Scene: Listen to the radio. A squad member who apparently knows you, says his squad is pinned down by a group of Black Ops. They’ll open the bunker door for you, which is on the other side of the canyon you entered this room from.

Soldier over radio: Adrian? Is that you? Listen we are hold up across the motor field. We are pinned down by a group of Black Ops. We’ll open the bunker door but you better get over here quick.

Location: ”The Package”; Ventilation.

Scene: Climb up the SUV into the vent, and talk to the security guard there. Apparently the Black Ops have a bomb, and they’re planning on blowing up the base.

Otis: Na-now don’t hurt me I-I tell you a secret! I’ve been hiding up here listening. These black Ops have some sort of bomb. I think they plan to blown up the base. Now now, why do you think they would do such a thing?

Location: ”The Package”; Barricaded Door .

Scene: When you try to open the door that Barney has barricaded himself behind before you deactivate the bomb, Barney gets pretty upset.

Barney: Are you crazy? I’m not opening this door until someone turns that bomb off.

Location: ”The Package”; Long Corridor.

Scene:. At the far end of a long corridor is a truck, with two Black Ops members chatting.. and arming a bomb.

Black Ops assassin #1: Be careful with that thing! One false move and this whole facility is gone.

Black Ops assassin #2: I’ve got it covered. You just keep your eyes open, there are still some targets running around out there.

Black Ops assassin #1: Get down! I hear something.

Location: ”The Package”; Barricaded Door .

Scene: Once you’ve deactivated the bomb, Barney opens the security door for you and says.

Barney: Uff that was a close one, you better get in here.

Barney: It’s not gonna be easy from here on now. The only way out is through the Level 4 Storage Unit but it’s a mess down there. The Black Ops were using it as a staging point until the aliens came in. If you do make it through, make sure you have them come back for us.

11 - World Collide

Location: World Collide; The Warehouse With Swinging Crates.

Scene: Once in the warehouse door, shut the door behind you and listen to Barney. Apparently there’s a huge alien downstairs. Stock up on all the weapons and ammo you can, and ride down the moving platform to the final epic battle of Opposing Force.

Barney: I guess you are a good guy Corporal. Listen, you’ve got to get down below. There is something coming through and it’s the nastiest looking thing yet. Some of your buddies went down there a while ago and I haven’t seen them since. I’ve got some weapons I’ve piled up in here, you better take as much as you can carry.. cause I think this is it. Good luck Corporal.

** There is a hidden sound file in the miscellaneous directory called dsbossit.wav and when you play it in reverse you can hear:

Voice: To win the game you must kill me Randy Pitchford.

Where Mr. Randy Pitchford is the Production Director of the Gearbox company (I’m not sure if you can hear actually this sound in the game).

Conclusion

Location: Conclusion; Inside The Chopper.

Scene: After the final battle, the G-man (also known as the Administrator) transports you first into Xen and then into unknown space, while giving you the following speech.

G-man: So, corporal Shephard, did we meet at last! Please, don’t think that I’ve been avoiding you, great many matters require my attention in this troubled times, I do hope you understand. And now I require a further indulgence on your part. I can not close my report until every loose end has been tied up. The biggest embarrassment has been, Black Mesa facility, but I think that’s finally taking care of itself.

G-man: Quite so.

G-man: But there is still the lingering matter of witnesses. I admit, I have a fascination with those, who adopt and survive against all odds. They rather remind me on myself, if for no other reason, I have argued to preserve you for a time.

G-man: While I believe a civil servant like yourself, understands the importance of discretion. My employers are not quite so trusting and rather than continually subjective to the irresistible human temptation of telling all, we have decided to convey you somewhere you can do no possible harm. And where no harm can come to you. I’m sure, you can imagine there are worse alternatives.

Scene: Unlike Freeman at the end of Half-Life, Shephard gets no choice.

Ending Titles:

SUBJECT: SHEPHARD

STATUS: DETAINED
