Physical Description

Hair

Straight, fine, dark-brown hair falls in one length, halfway between his chin and shoulders. He usually flips it behind his ear if he's concentrating on something, or might do the same as a nervous action. He always keeps it clean and usually perfumes his hair and clothing for the aroma's calming effect on his patients (it beats burning incense or candles, which can be a fire hazard).

Eyes

Light blue eyes, the outer rim of the irises encompassed by a dark blue ring. They are wide and slightly almond-shaped, with the illusion of a slight slant due to eyebrows cocked in amusement or a smirk.

Physique

Olethym stands at nearly 6' tall, starting to fill out with age, so that his body-type appears somewhere between willowy and athletic. He has the stamina to pull a 16-hour shift several days in a row, though as with anyone, is thoroughly worn out.

Appearance

His face is oval-shaped with regular features and a rounded chin; his cheekbones are not especially prominent, jaw-line not particularly strong. His snub nose is neither wide nor narrow. Lips are slightly thin and very expressive, drawn up in an amused or sensuous smirk as easily as a snarl. Pale skin with light-colored freckles on his face and arms from the sun. He has a long scar on his right wrist that most people take as a mark from a failed suicide attempt. The truth is, tough it did nearly kill him from the loss of blood, the wound was actually a result of a hysterical patient.

Clothing

He wears a long tunic of white or un-dyed fabric, with slitted sides for easier movement, over his clothing in the infirmary. It is made of a thick, but comfortable fabric, with simple trim at the hem. He usually wears slippers of soft, sueded leather inside, sandals or boots outside. When away from the Infirmary, he usually carries a leather shoulder bag full of first-aid supplies. Experience has taught him to be readily prepared... Also, he has two piercings on the lower part of each earlobe, silver earrings shaped in a silver ball attached to a flattened diamond-shaped stone. The first pair is set with pea-sized turquoise stones, the second with white coral, all in that flattened diamond shape.

Personality

When outside of the infirmary and away from his craft, he rarely gets upset, and is often quiet around people; not shy, but rather, calculating.

However, when in the infirmary, he seems to switch roles. Normally, while he is rarely intimidated, his personality is not particularly imposing on others. His appearance is still boyish in his young years, especially with the freckles dotting his face. But in the infirmary, he is in charge of what he is doing and his surprisingly low voice tells them so! If a patient thinks they know better, they can leave. He does not hesitate to do or say what he feels he must. He is gentle but firm with children and nervous patients.

After a rocky start in the infirmary, Olethym established himself as Weyr Healer, having proven himself time and again during threadfall and other emergencies since his arrival. After a particularly difficult time involving the birth of the Weyrwoman's twins and an incident involving several weyrlings and the WeyrlingMaster, Olethym has learned to keep himself more emotionally detached with his patients. To the disappointment of some, and the joy of others. Some still don't like him, but that's to be expected.

So he's gone back to inconspicuously watching people (and now dragons and flitters as well), from a corner in the dining hall or a ledge or wherever, and drawing them in accurate and even minute detail, depending on the subject. He tries not to be noticed, since it naturally makes people suspicious, nervous, and even afraid to feel like they are "being watched." He has many sketches of volunteers, though his best work is of those who have no idea they have been noticed. Why does he draw? Originally it was for documentation purposes, like a recordskeeper among healers. He had the talent and the skill and the desire; what followed was only natural. He has tablets, scrolls, and booklets full of sketches, diagrams, and charts, of anything from herbs in their different stages (cycles) of growth, to the anatomy of humans, dragons, and firelizards.

He is very intelligent, understanding the workings of the body almost as well as he can draw it. His knowledge is the result of a steady accumulation of knowledge over many years, having learned from his family in the healingcraft. He is a quick study with a long attention-span and a great deal of patience, mainly because he loves to learn. He was always an apt student, both curious and diligent.

Family

When Olethym was born, his father was working with the dolphins in diagnosing ailments. The rest of his family is scattered all over the Southern continent. Both of his parents were born into large families, most of the members specializing in something in the healercraft. As a result, Olethym received a well-rounded schooling in the healercraft, having studied at the source in many cases. With this hands-on training, he was better able to grasp the complex relationships of body groups, medicines and other treatments with one another at a much younger age.
