http://kidsocialstudies.about.com/kids/kidsocialstudies/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.michielb.nl%2Fmaya%2Fastro_content.html This site is has 6 different sections having to do with the ancient civilization of the Mayans, including: geographical orientation, mathematics, the Mayan Calendar, Mayan writings, astronomy and related links. There is a lot of information in each of these sections about the amazing Mayan culture. The calendar and mathematics sections are of particular interest. It is amazing how advanced this civilization was. The site is not too fancy, it is more about the information than anything else, although there are a few graphics that add to the overall feel of the site. http://www.maya-art-books.org/ When exploring this site you will be exposed to more of the art, artifacts and rituals of the Mayan culture. The site is very big and requires some exploration, but it provides some very nice pictures and photographs of ancient Mayan vases, paintings sculptures and much more. A site like this helps one to see the many wonderful artistic talents these indigenous people had. I recommend looking at the vases and rituals links that can be found about half way down the page. http://mayaruins.com/ This is a very neat site that has selected Mayan archaeological sites in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. The site is set up very nicely and it is easy to get around. There hundreds of photos and an interactive map that lets you pick the ruins and then see a picture of the place and a description of what archaeologists know about the place. Seeing the ruins, and pictures of these different places helps to put into perspective some of the architectural achievement that the Mayans accomplished. They are certainly comparable to the achievements in Ancient Egypt. I am writing to you today because I believe my story needs to be told. My name is Mestopitixc or to you people The Great Mayan Calendar. As you might guess I am extremely old. I have been around for many centuries and seen many things over the years. I was created by my people thousands of years before the birth of Christ. From then on I continued to guide my people throughout their lives, serving as a reference for them. For being so old many people consider me quite sophisticated which is a credit to the people who gave me life so many years ago. In case you are wondering how I work I will tell you.I consist of 260 days and each of my days has a name, much like your days of the week. I have twenty of these day names, and each of them is represented by a very unique symbol. My days are numbered from 1 to 13 and because I only have 20 day names after the count reached 13 the next day is numbered one again. I was very sacred to my people and because of this I was used throughout MesoAmerica for many centuries. Today I have been replaced by more modern calendars but I think my part in history should not be forgotten, after all I once was and still am the Great Mayan Calender. |
