DESTINATIONS
If you own skis and ice screws in the South, you are, to state it politely, optimistic. Avalanches and glaciated spires have given way over the eons to rattle snakes and grassy balds as the prominent challenges of the Southern Appalachians. Mind her moods carefully, though, in winter, and she may invite you to play with the dusty toys of the last trip to Colorado.
The nirvana in this photograph required years of stalking. Last winter brought at least a handful of days with leadable ice and skiable powder/granular on the high balds. <- This morning on Stratton Bald was absolutely windless, the air 5 degrees, and 18" of true powder drifting up to 3 feet.
