Introducing the Lesson to the Students

If you have ever tried to find a job here in America, perhaps you’ve noticed that some of the vocabulary words used in interviews are difficult to understand.  The purpose of this lesson is to introduce you to some job-related words which may be unfamiliar to you.  Please complete the online assignment in preparation for our in class activities.

Online Assignment

  1. Open the first attachment and read the paragraph about preparing to look for a job.
  2. Try to figure out the meaning of the words.
  3. Circle those words which you do not know and look them up using any online dictionary (such as www.longmanwebdict.com).
  4. Go to the next attachment, which is a matching exercise made in Script-O!  You will need to close the design mode.  Complete the exercise and either email it to me or bring it to class
  5. Open the third attachment containing a list of crossword puzzle hints.  Print a copy of these hints.
  6. Open the fourth attachment.  Complete the crossword puzzle and then send it back to me as an attachment.

In Class Activities

  1. Ask students to relate their experiences in seeking a job in their native countries and/or in America.
  2. Ask students for any questions regarding the assigned vocabulary words.
  3. Break the class into pairs and have the students role play a job-seeking situation in which they use as many of the vocabulary words as possible.
  4. Ask for one or two pairs to volunteer to present their role playing to the entire class.  Supplement the role playing by asking questions which encourage the use of any vocabulary words which they have not used.
  5. Direct the students to write a short paragraph incorporating as many of the words as possible.

Paragraph Using Job-Related Words

Read the selection below, which contains vocabulary words for our unit on “Finding a Job.”  Then follow the directions in your online assignment.

One of the first steps in finding a job is to think about what you will write in your resume and what you will say when you are interviewed.  In your resume, you will need to give a profile of yourself, beginning with a statement of your objective, followed by a list of your credentials for the job.

Sometimes people are recruited for jobs with the help of a headhunter.  Other times individuals follow ads in newspapers or contact the personnel department in various companies.  In either case, remember that your interviewers might ask your rationale or reason for wanting to work in their company, and they might ask about your performance in other jobs.

As you prepare to look for a job, think about what your preferences might be.  What kind of work do you like to do?  Do you prefer routine or challenging work?   Would you like to work in retail, for example?  Do you want to work where you can train for an executive position?  Do you want to work for a company which is part of a larger network?  What kind of compensation would you expect to receive?  Will you have to negotiate a salary?  You will want to think about these questions in order to become a successful candidate as you search for a job in America.
