Filling Out Tax Forms
Warm –Up Review Civics Responsibility with Students. In
groups, have students make a list of these responsibilities (auto
registration + insurance, responding to jury summons, paying taxes,
following the rules of the road, etc.) Write April 15th on the board.
Ask students what happens on this day.
Introduction Today we will be learning about Tax Forms and
how to fill out a tax form.
Presentation Introduce and go over vocabulary needed to
understand a tax form. Put up a sample 1040 form and highlight some of
the more challenging words. As you go through the vocabulary, fill out
the tax form for a fictitious person.
Practice In pairs, have students go to http://www.quia.com/pages/eslstaci.html
and complete the 3 exercises related to tax vocabulary. Have
students report their scores to you. Then give each pair an info gap
activity where they will ask each other questions to complete The
Jenkins Family tax form.
Evaluation Go over the answers as a class, having students
come up to fill out the form on the OHP.
Application Give students their own tax forms and have
them fill it out with their own personal information.
Expansion Activity Have students go to http://www.irs.gov/and
download tax forms and find information.
