Introduction
1. How was the C.P.R. built?
2. Why was the C.P.R. built?
3. Who came up with the idea of the C.P.R.?
4. How long did it take to build the C.P.R.?
5. How many people were involved?
I am doing this project because I love my fellow Canada and I am very glad I
Live here. I knew much about Canada before I did this project but now I know
Tons more about it without even having to learn about it. That is why I chose
This project.
What I am trying to show and tell people is that Canada is more than just a
Country on the map. But that it is a very great country with tons of great stuff
In it. Like, for instance the C.P.R. in which this report is going to be totally
Based on.
The significance to us for the C.P.R. is that if we never had this railroad
Than we probably would never be like this today. It did more for Canada than
Most people think. It was more than just a landmark. It was a symbol of how
Great Canada is.
C.P. Railroad
Sir John A. McDonald promised our home country a railroad that would span all
The way across it. He had fulfilled his great promise by building a tremendously
Lone train track. They called this legend, the Canadian Pacific Railroad. This
Railroad even goes across this town. To us, that is an honor.
As Sir John A. McDonald promised this railroad track to Canada as being elected
First Prime Minister of Canada, he was not the only one who wanted this railroad
To be made. There was more than one reason that he decided to have this railroad
Made. He was afraid the U.S. would take over the prairies and if they did than
Today we would be part of the U.S.A. Also, British Columbia wanted a connection
With the eastern provinces being the western-most province in Canada.
For the making of the C.P.R., there were more people working on it than you’d
Imagine. There were more than one thousand. There were more than five thousand.
There were even over ten thousand people working on the railroad! There were even
Chinese immigrants that worked on this railroad and helped the Canadians give
Birth to this legend. These immigrants never had any money when they came to
Canada and we felt bad for them so we gave them jobs so they could have some
Money and not live on the streets. They made it that much easier for Canada to
Build the railroad.
When you are building something as big as this you have to have somebody to
Direct it right? Well this particular, lots of train companies conducted this
Project. They must be the top of the line train companies because them directing
The people are what made it happen. We are truly grateful for those people.
When the railroad was finished people were astonished to find out that when
Building the track only took 6 years to build. That is really fast to build a
train track across Canada since it was back in the old days and there wasn’t
much technology. Donald A. Smith drove the last spike into the track. He had a
few troubles the first time he tried so it took another couple of hours to make
one more spike for the railroad. After, he successfully drove the last spike in
on November 7th, 1886. Everybody was excited for that railroad across Canada.
The first train departed June of 1885. That was a joyous day for all Canadians.
When the railroad was built, they didn’t need to use bulldozers or trucks or
dump trucks or any electric powered vehicles to build it. All they had to use
was the good old hand and his partner the arms. Wouldn’t you be surprised if
you were there back then and it only took six years to build a railroad across
Canada with bare hands. There was over one thousand miles of track laid in order
to complete the railroad. I could see why it only took 6 years to build, the
construction rapidly passed the plains and moved on to the eastern provinces.
The eastern provinces are where they had a good pace of work.
The C.P.R. was build in the 1880’s to meet the needs of the 1890’s. The one
thing about the C.P.R. that most people don’t know is it wasn’t able to meet all
the demands set upon it. The people who were building the C.P.R. used
promotional stunts to complete their job.
When the railroad was finished, Canada by my opinion must have been the
happiest country in the whole world. With Sir John A. McDonald being the first
Canadian Prime Minister, Canada couldn’t believe he pulled through with this
gigantic event.
