19/07/2001 - 0.. kms (flat on rear tire) (ferry from Helsingborg to Copenhagen)
Got off the ferry in Copenhagen and my rear tire was flat, so I fixed it
on the sidewalk near the ferry, then went to find the tourist office. Got
maps and the address of the Youth Hostels, and picked the YMCA since it was
the most interesting one and settled in for 3 nights. I would be spending my
birthday (the 20th) here.

Copenhagen is just charming with its colourful houses and canals (an
intricate system throughout the city, also common in Holland and Belgium),
Tivoli (read backwards it spells "I Lov It") Gardens, parks with
windmills, warm and friendly people. So I spent a couple of days wandering
the city and splurging on Danish pastries.

22/07/2001 - 100 kms Slagelse
I got up early well-rested, got ready, said goodbye to Lisbeth (a charming
young Danish lady at the YMCA YH) and left Copenhagen due west.

Did good time cycling to Roskilde (a fishing community about 40 kms west
of Copenhagen) and spent some time here resting and snacking while talking
with locals and a couple of French cyclist.
Then I went on cycling to Slagelse, on the western side of Sjaeland (the
Danish island which contains Copenhagen), where I spent the night.
23/07/2001 - 73. kms Odense (bus from Korsor to Nyborg)
In the morning, I cycled to Korsor but bicycles weren't allowed on the
bridge crossing the Store Baelt straights to Nyborg on the Fyn peninsula. My
choices were the train or bus across the bridge. I took the bus as it was
more convenient (it had a trailer specifically for bikes) and cheaper. I then
cycled west to Odense where there was a Photography Museum I wanted to check
out so I settled down in a campground near the southern end of the city (not
a great deal at about the same price as a Youth Hostel, but everything was
full in town). In the morning I spent sometime at the museum and left.
24/07/2001 - 67. kms Fynshav (ferry from Bojden to Fynshav)
Leaving Odense, I wasn't sure whether to go northwest to the Jutland
peninsula or southwest towards Germany. In the end, since everything was full
(campgrounds and hostels) in Denmark during this vacation period and all that
Jutland seemed to offer was more windmills, flat field and Legoland, I opted
to go towards Germany and headed southwest.

I arrived at Bojden by mid-afternoon but had to wait a couple of hours for
the ferry to Fynshav in southeast Jutland. By the time I arrived in Fynshav
it was time to settle for the night and I found a little campground by the
sea.
In the morning, I got up and cycled the 30 kms or so to Sonderborg where I
took a rest, some pictures and had a snack. I cycled the 20 kms to Krusa, the
Danish border town and spent my remaining kronors on a German map and a beer.
Well, overall Denmark is a very small country, few forests, mostly
farmlands, very flat with very little to catch the eye aside from a few
picturesque windmills... so I zipped by very quickly.
The only points of interest in my experience are the people and
Copenhagen.
The people are very open, warm and easy to talk to, as well most women
share the physical attributes of Scandinavian women. Copenhagen is a very
pretty multicultural city... it was easy to spend a couple of days just
wandering and people watching... and eating pastries...
Denmark is also a pleasure to cycle with a well developed network of cycle
routes... in fact most main and secondary roads are doubled with paved
cycling paths... safe, good surface, and out of the traffic.
