Lost At Sea

I sighed as I pulled my sunglasses down over my eyes and continued to ruffle around Brian’s hair as he lay with me on the small air mattress, we had drifted further out into the ocean and I wasn’t exactly sure where we were. The sun was setting in the distant and I wandered what time it was but I didn’t bother to check Brian’s watch cause I knew it had to be somewhere around seven o’clock. I looked to my left a little to see Codi sleeping happily on her floatie, She was happy because she won her argument with Nick and now he lay mopping on the small blow-up boat we had with us.
We had went to the beach this morning, a secluded part just right outside Nick’s house, immediately me and Brian had grabbed an air mattress and set out for the water, Codi and Nick fought for a while over who got the better mattress until finally when Nick wasn’t looking Codi ran off out to the water with her pick of floatie, and since Codi isn’t much of a sharer Nick had to get his own, which was just a little blow-up boat his brother left at his house the weekend before. None us had been paying attention to the wind carrying us further out as we all lay around and basked in the sun, before any of knew it we were a long way from home. We couldn’t see land anymore and we were just drifting further out each minute. There wasn’t much we could do so we just lay there and let the wind carry us further out, hoping maybe we’d come across a boat or an island. Maybe the coast guard would find us or something, anything by the end of the day, now at seven o’clock in the evening it was getting rather cold and all we had was our bathing suits. Codi and Brian had complained about being hungry, but Nick and I had pigged out on watermelon before we came out so we weren’t exactly starving.
“Are you cold?” Brian asked me as he shifted his head to look up at me. He had his head resting on my stomach and his feet dangling off the end of our floatie.
“A little. You?” I asked him as I wrapped my arms tighter around his chest. He was slightly shivering so I knew he had to be freezing. Although knowing Brian he would shrug it off and play tough which is exactly what he did.
“I’m fine.” He whispered to me and laid his head back down on my stomach.
We were all majorly sun burned from being out all day and the only thing keeping my legs and stomach from blistering was Brian blocking the sun from them. I looked to my right and gasped at what I saw, Brian heard this and looked up at me.
“Look…is that…is that trees off in the distance?” I said pointing a finger towards the sunset. I rubbed my eyes slightly, wondering if there was such a thing as a mirage in the ocean instead of the desert. It was clearly trees up ahead, palm trees. Those beautiful palm trees that convinced me to move to Florida in the first place. Brian looked up at what I was talking about and a smile came across his face. He yelled over to Nick, who was lazing in the boat a little ways form us. We had tried to stay close together when we found that we had drifted off to sea and now we always checked to make sure we were all together and no one was lost.
“Hey Nick. Is that an island?” Brian asked Nick as he pointed in that direction. Nick gave a chuckle and shook his head up and down violently. Codi heard them and jerked her head up she turned to me.
“Dude, we’re saved!” She hollered over to me, I smiled at her, even though it hurt severely to even talk with such bad sunburn on my face.
It wasn’t too far off so Nick paddled with his hands over to the island, soon after me, Codi, and Brian followed…
We swam the last little bit and made our way to Island, Nick went looking around to see if it was habited, maybe we came upon a tourist spot, either that or the natives would come stake us out and eat us alive.
