Bald Eagles inhabit coastal regions and the vicinity of lakes, swamps, marshes ansd streams. They fed primarily on fish, but also hunt and kill small animals, rodents and reptiles such as ducks, birds, rabbits, snakes, turtle etc. They will also scavenge carrion when they find it.
Bald Eagles fly to altitudes of 10,000 feet or more and can soar for hours on updrafts and thermals. They can fly about 65 MPH in level flight and can get to speeds of 150-200 MPH when diving.
Bald Eagles have very powerful, long and sharp talons which they grab their prey with. They can exert up to 1,000 pounds of pressure per square inch with each foot. They can graab birds in mid-flight and can dive and grab fish and small animals while in flight also. They can only lift about half of their body weight and can 'swim' short distances using thier wings as paddles.
Bald Eagles can not move their eyes within their eye sockets, they must move their whole head. Their eyes have two focal points which allow them to see both forward and to the side at the same time. Their vision is almost 4 times sharper than a human with 20/20/ vision. With such vision they can see a rabbit moving almost a mile away. From an altitude of 1,000 feet, in open country, an Eagle can observe approximately 3 square miles while soaring. |
