I like AMC Eagles and making modifications to them when I have time. I was planning to put a Grande Cherokee 5.2 Litre (fuel injected) motor, automatic overdrive transmission and 2 speed transfer case into my '83 Eagle wagon but money ran out, so I'm putting in a good used 4.2L {258} 6 cylinder, which should make a big difference from the tired 4.0L that was in it (with the head and carb off the original 4.2L that the Eagle came with), when the previous owner took the 4.2L bottom end for his 89 Jeep Cherokee and sold me the car (in the picture on the top of my homepage and below).

I'm in the Seattle area and I'm looking for an AMC 727 trans core (4x4) with a good output shaft and a NP 229 transfer case. Got 1? drop me a line. {update} I have a NP219 tranfercase (which I originally wanted), {I have changed my mind and want a NP229 now!} but I'm still looking for a 727 trans core (or output shaft) to fit a Jeep 6, V8 or an International 4x4 with a 258. I have an NP219 transfercase but I need an output shaft for the 727 4x4, because the one I have now is out of a 2 wheel drive Javelin!
On 20-FEB-1998 13:22:01.7 amc-list said to DSRTFOX I have an '83 Eagle wagon which I'm planning a V-8 conversion (as soon as I finish moving. The rear end of choice for Eagles is an '86-90 Jeep Grande Cherokee (or xj) like my friend Cam Brown did to his AMC 360 EFI conversion. Almost all these years with tow package had Dana 44's in them. If that's still too rich for your blood, then a 1/2 ton Dodge P/U 8 3/4 diff from about '68 (and what ever fits that) will fit with few modifications. (I had one in mine temporarily til I found another Eagle donor car) The other thing I found out when I lifted mine was that the axles on the front were too short(they pulled out of the inner end on high speed airborne turns!), so I went to a FWD Caddy axle (that extra 1/2" helps!) I also found out that the lower suspension on the front was the same as Caddy also (at least by measuring tape and looks!) Don't know if one of their diffs will work in there yet or not, but if I find out I'll post it. PS I'm having problems getting online at my new place and my E-mail is all backed up, so be patient! When you get time to write something about that Eagle lift, let me know, especially if you can include some pics! Would also be interested in your experiences with the V8 conversion. Would be good for a couple free issues of AIM.... Francis (Frank) G. Swygert :: dsrtfox@delphi.com Publisher, "the world of 68' micros" & "American Independent" Magazine
My personal favorite shitbox is my 1983 AMC Eagle 4X4 wagon. I bought it a year ago for $300 because the previous owner couldn't get it through emissions testing here in WA state and it was running rougher than hell too. I was looking for a good trans when I found it, then decided to fix it. I put in a used muffler from a Concorde wagon I had bought for parts to fix up my neighbor's car with (it needed a trans and I bought 3 for parts before I said the hell with it and rebuilt one of them) I sold lots of parts from these cars, especially the motors to Jeep afficianados and recouped my loss. Then I put in a $500 trailer hitch and $200 worth of tires on it and built a trailer out of a 20 foot '91 International bus. Pulling it around this summer burned out the rearend, plus someone hit me and broke my rear axle and the insurance co wrote it off for $1200. I replaced the rear end and now I need to replace the transfer case, so the parts car I bought is coming in real handy.           I also helped my friend put an AMC 360 V8 in his Eagle and I'm planning to do the same to mine. My kids cut the front end off the parts car for me so I can use it to mock up a Dodge 318 with fuel injection in it and not tie up my daily driver too long. I've put about 20,000 miles on it this year, mostly driving back and forth between Seattle and Vancouver BC. It's a fantastic highway car, even if it won't go into 4 wheel when I need it. It's one of the few cars I can drive without getting back pain from being scrunched up in the front seat. I also hear it was a fav of another tall man (I'm 6') the duke himself, John Wayne. I drove past his old place on the coast and there's still 3 parts cars sitting at the back of his house. Hope I didn't bore you too much.           PS My own homepage is below. I used to work on Renault Le curses in BC. I was one of the few that could get them through the emission test up there as well as a lot of other clunkers. California and EPA don't like the way I can get them done, but I follow their rules, and I get results! When people say take it easy, I say I'll take anything I can get, except abuse.    Saved message From: efcinc@rapidnet.com (Craig Thompson) Date: Tue, May 25, 1999, 6:41pm (PDT+1) To: Carnuck@webtv.net (James Blair) Subject: Re: Eagle 3.08 front gears I have an 85 with tow package. It has 3.08 grears. I think (but am no sure) that the front uses the same codes as the rears: AXLE LETTER CODE RATIO PIN/RING STANDARD  TWINGRIP
3.54 11/39          A       N
      3.08 13/40  F       T
      3.31 13/43 G S
2.73 15/41         H       U
      2.37 19/45 J       NONE
  2.53 K       V
The code, incase you aren't familiar, is in the boss (I guess it's called) next to the diff. cover plate where the axle tube attaches to the pumpkin. It is the letter code stamped in the boss.
