Some company like the BioTime, Inc found a solution for using low temperature surgery to solve the risks of damaging the patients’ organs and brain during surgery. Interrupting the patient’s blood flow at normal body temperature during surgery creates the risk of damaging the brain and organs. They only have a limited of time before they are damaged due to the decrease in oxygen supply. The use of low temperature surgery lowers the chemical rate of the patient’s body; another words lowering their metabolism. Since oxygen flows through the blood and by lowering the temperature it will lower the patient’s demand for oxygen. The low temperature acts like an inhibitor, slowing down the reactions in the body.

How does lowering the body temperature lower the body’s metabolism? For example, a bear hibernates in the winter. As we know in the winter the temperature is low. How does a bear live through winter without food and oxygen? When bears hibernate in the winter their body metabolism decrease and they need less oxygen and food to survive because they can operate at a lower temperature. At low temperature their biological reaction occurs more slowly just like how low temperature surgery reduce the demand for oxygen. Another example is using low temperature as an inhibitor to slow down the spoil of foods in refrigerator. Therefore low temperature acts like an inhibitor to slow down the reactions.

According to the BioTime, Inc they found a better way to enhance the surgical process. They would cool the patient’s body with a cooling blanket, which is then connected to a cardiopulmonary bypass circuit. They then replace the blood with a substitute; in this case the blood is replaced with BioTime’s ice cold blood. The patient’s body is cooled until it is almost freezing. While the body temperature is low, surgery is done. When the surgery is finish the body is then re-warmed and blood is replaced. These surgical techniques were tested on animal and were considered as positive results. The company believes that this low temperature surgery can also be used on people for open heart or other organ surgeries.
