Prologue
June 22, 1997
Adam had awakened with a start just as the sun had set behind the horizon. He shot up as he tried to focus his eyes to the dimly lit room. As he slowly turned his head from side to side to remember where he was, he grumbled a curse when he couldn't quite figure out
what had torn him from his sleep. He wrinkled his nose as he heard the others already whining about something.

"But….but he was supposed to be MINE! Not his!" he heard Shannon whimper as he tossed the sheets back and got up from the bed, oblivious to the fact that he was still stark naked. Adam raked his hand through his golden mane as he headed towards the bedroom door and poked his head through.

"Will you shut up! It's too damn early for this crap."

"YOU shut up!" Shannon called back from the den down the hall. Adam gave a sigh and shut his door as he heard something moving on the bed and groaning. At first, he was surprised that he had fallen asleep with last nights hunt….until he had remembered who exactly was the kill. Then suddenly he grinned figuring out that it was him who Shannon was complaining about … again. The little twerp thought that he was the only one who could get the young bloods and yet time and time again Adam always managed to show him up. He chuckled at his triumph as he walked over to the other side of the bed and brushed a strand of nearly pitch-black hair away from a beautifully well-rounded face.

Matt groaned at the abrasion of knuckles gliding across his cheek and turned his head along with them. It took him a short while before he managed to get his eyelids even halfway open. What he saw before him looked like a vision. Dim amber light glowed around shades of golden hair and a sharp face. Jeff? Wait, no that was wrong. Who
the hell was it?

"Time to get up, Matthew."

"Wh-what time is it? And who the hell are you?"

Adam chuckled as he backed away from the bed and moved around towards the mahogany dresser backed up against the opposite wall. He absently looked over at the small silver watch lying on the dresser top. "It's 8:50."

"In the morning?"

"No, it's the evening now."

Matt sat up a little confused and blinked his eyes as they quickly adjusted to the candlelight. "Then why are you getting me up?"

"You can't very well walk in the daylight, so I thought I'd start you on a routine already."

Matt raised an eyebrow as he started to toss the set of sheets off. As he swung his legs over the edge of the bed, he suddenly felt cold and looked down. His eyes widened as he quickly reached for the sheets to cover himself up again. Okay, I just had a one-night stand with a total freak. Great. Matt thought to himself as he glanced over at Adam. "So, do you mind telling me *why* I can't walk around when everyone else is? And I wanna know at least your name." he asked as he started to search around the room for something of his to wear with his eyes.

Adam gave an absent glance over his shoulder at the disgruntled Hardy as he bent down, pulling out a pair of dark blue silk boxers. His favorite. He turned around, smirking a little as he saw Matt's posture straighten a little, noticing that he was still blatantly naked. As he stepped into the boxers, he simply said, "Adam."

Matt gave an aggravated sigh and finally found his simple black cotton boxers, pulling them up his legs quickly and standing up from the bed. "Ok, I've got one of my questions answered. Now, tell me, *Adam*, why can't I go out in the daytime like everyone else? Hmm? Last time I checked, I wasn't allergic to the sun or anything." Adam smirked a little as he started for the door.

"Aw, you should know since you agreed to it last night. You're extraordinary now. Think about it for a second and come out to meet a few people when you're done."

Adam left yelling something down the hall at Shannon, leaving Matt scratching his head with a somewhat perplexed look on his face. Two out of three straight answers. Matt heaved a sigh as he rubbed his temple and started for the door after Adam. Others. Matt had just remembered and looked down at himself. He wasn't going to parade around in his underwear with people he doesn't even know. He quickly scanned the room before he saw a chair with a pair of faded black jeans and a simple dark red translucent button down shirt that looked to be his size.

He shrugged a little when he couldn't find his clothes anywhere in sight and decided to put them on. He was shrugging into the shirt as a knocked sounded at the door. He raised an eyebrow for second as he finished the last button and walked over towards the door. When he opened it, he expected to see Adam again but instead had to look down into a bleach-blonde bombshell of a woman. He hadn't realized he was staring until she reached out and ran her finger down the collar of the shirt and hummed something of approval.

"I see you've found the clothes that were set out."

It took him for a second to find his words before he stuttered out "Th-they're mine?"

Suddenly, honey colored eyes drew up towards his as amusement filled them. "Well, I figured you didn't want to run around half naked all night so I came in and set them here around 4 this morning. I think they're the right size."

"Why that early?"

"Don't tell me he didn't say something."

"Huh?"

The blonde wrinkled her nose and tossed her arms up in the air as she went down the hall, yelling Adam's name. "These people are fucking nuts." he mumbled as he looked down the hall and then decided to head down towards where the woman was going. As Matt started to turn towards the corner, he literally ran into a small man with a pixie face. "Whoa, sorry." he said in apology and stepped back a little as the man looked up at him with a face that could send anyone to want to calm the little guy down.

"Why'd you come home with *him*?! You were supposed to be *mine*!" Little Man whined as he crossed his arms and pushed past Matt. Things just keep getting more like the Twilight Zone. He thought to himself as he finally found the den where everyone was either going to or coming from. When he walked into the doorway, he saw Adam leaning over man clad in black and gold fabric. The blonde was walking around Adam, flicking the back of his head with her fingers as she went on about….well, Matt.

"Why didn't you tell him when you woke him up?"

"Because."

"That answer only works for seven year olds and under."

"Well, people always said I was a little kid at heart." Adam glanced up at her with a smirk on his face. As he started to turn back towards the man in the high back recliner, he saw Matt standing in the doorway and straightened up. "And if you're so worried about telling him already, why don't you tell him yourself?"

Trish made a face as she looked up and saw Adam not paying attention to her. Her gaze followed his as her eyes laid upon Matt. Matt stood by the door, at a complete lost as he looked at Trish and then Adam, never noticing the man hunched over a leather bound book in the chair. "Why must we have all this crap going on a soon as you people wake up?" the man in the chair asked as he started to close his book and slowly draw his gaze up to the three. As his eyes landed upon Matt, one corner of his mouth curved up slightly, seductively. "At least they have a reason this time," he held out his hand and said as Matt took it "and you seem like a very good reason."

Matt was hesitant for a few seconds before he took the man's hand and shook it cautiously but firmly. Matt tried his best to read the look on the man's face but had no success. "Can I ask something? Why am I still here?"

The man sat back in his chair and looked at Adam, showing disappointment. He turned back to Matt and said, "Well, first off, my name is Scott Levy, you've met Adam and perhaps Trish. The reason why you're still here and have people fighting over you is because, well, you're one of us now."

"Oh, yeah. That clears up a lot! …. What the hell are you then?"

Scott sighed a little as he rubbed one of his temples. "I'm not going to tell you because it could scare you off or something. Adam has the honor," he looked up at Adam and gave him a look. "and he's going to do it before the night is over."

"What makes you think I won't leave anyway? I've got to live with one freak. I don't need however many more you got hiding here."

Scott gave a sigh as he got up and walked over to Matt, looking at him for a second. He walked past him and went down the hallway where everyone could hear Shannon complaining. As Matt turned back towards Adam and Trish, he could see that they were both looking past him and towards Scott. They could sense some apprehension in their creator and waited until he was in the same room as Shannon. Once the door was shut, Adam turned his attention to Matt while Trish's was on Adam. "So you want to know what you and what we are?" Adam asked grudgingly. He never liked telling the new ones because they'd usually go ballistic on them…him.

Matt crossed his arms over his chest and tilted his head to the side. "It'd be nice to know." Matt watched as Trish moved past him and shut the door behind her leaving the two men in the room alone. Adam went to sit in one of the over-stuffed crimson easy chairs and waved to another one, silently ordering Matt to sit. Matt eyed him before he went and sat down across from him. He leaned down to rest his forearms on his thighs and looked up a little at Adam, waiting.

Adam groaned as he leaned back and closed his eyes, letting his head fall back against the chair. He could hear Matt shifting around in the chair and started to block out the little sound as he thought. A few silent minutes had past before a slow, sly smile crept up into Adam's face. He knew how to do this the right way. He opened his eyes and looked over at Matt. "Want to go somewhere?" he asked as he started tot get up out of the chair.

"Uh…..can I get a clue first?"

"You'll get it when we get there."

Adam walked out of the room and started to go down the hall to his room as Matt growled in frustration and got up following behind him.

Two Hours Later

Adam pulled up to the curb of a dark street lined with various apartments serving as crack whorehouses. Matt looked up at one of the buildings and raised his eyebrow a little as he turned towards Adam. "So…don't tell me you're a crack addict or something."

Adam just looked at him for a second and rolled his eyes. "Just because I'm parked here doesn't mean I go to theses dumps often. Just good way of business here."

"Business? Oh no, your telling me you're a man-whore now?"

That got Adam. He busted out laughing and looked over towards Matt as he allowed his fangs to come to their full length, just a few millimeters longer than normal. Matt saw them gleaming in the street light and started to sit back a little, biting on his lip until a copper taste started to come into his mouth. Adam smiled a little knowing that Matt was starting to realize. As they were about to speak, both Matt and Adam caught a faint scent of young mortals. Adam looked down the street and was able to see a couple walking down the street about 30 feet away. Before Adam could order Matt on how he should go this, he heard the passenger door open and quickly tried to reach for Matt….and was too slow.

Matt’s teeth were aching more with each step he took towards the couple. He could hear Adam behind him getting out of the car and coming up from behind him. Matt kept his pace as he licked the blood from his lip and could feel something sharp come down against his lip. It scared the hell out of him that he all of a sudden felt a hunger for something, and he was surprised that his own blood made that hunger even greater.

Adam finally caught up with Matt and grabbed his arm firmly, jerking Matt back up against him. Adam leaned over to whisper into Matt's ear. "Now, I know you mother told you to never play with your food, but after tonight, that's the only way you can have food without casting suspicion on yourself." Adam let go of Matt and followed behind him as he saw Matt come up towards the two lovebirds, startling them. Adam quickly came up and shot the man against the wall as Matt grabbed the young woman and sunk his teeth in. Matty Boy seemed to learn quickly.
