Dear Hugh Ross (or Rosskin) ?, I thank you and welcome your posting parts of the White family book on the Internet. I wish to visit your private web site.
A tradition passed down in my Stewart family is that my Stewart ancestors were friends and neighbors of your White family before they left Ireland. After I discovered that my Stewart ancestors were next to your White family on the passenger list (see http://www.oocities.org/earlofdonegal/LIST.htm ) of the Earl of Donegal, this tradition seemed confirmed.
The name of my great great great great grandmother Rosannah amongst members of the White family on the passenger list also caused me to wondered if she were a WHITE before she married my tritavus James STEWART.
Any information about our two families before they left Ireland is especially valuable since so many government records were destroyed in Belfast in 1922. Fortunately many church, etc. records survive, so such small clues might help us discover more of the history of both families. Sincerely, Stewart

Mr. Bob Wilkins <bobw@multifund.com> posted Jan 18, 2001 at http://www.myfamily.com/ about an error in the WHITE family book: Dale Whites book The history of The White Family of Chester SC is incorrect it list Elizbeth White as born here in 1769 to Willam White and his wife Ann. Elizbeth married James Wilkins in 1769. We believe as you do that Elizbeth was Eleanor White's daughter and that William White was her husband. Elizbeth received 100 acres upon arriving in Chester.
The only statement that is not fact above is that we are not sure if Elizbeth was Eleanor's daughter but we are researching the birth records in Ireland in order to prove her parentage.
Elizbeth married my 5th grandfather James Wilkins and had 13 childern.

I e-maiiled Mr. Bob Wilkins several times but received no reply. I interpreted a rather confusing 25 Jan 2001 letter which I received from "Bob Wilkins" <bobw@1sonic.net> to mean the following:

Elizabeth White married James Wilkins in 1769. She was born 1752 according to her 1830s application for James Wilkins' Revolutionary War pension. She had 13 children and raised the ... child of James Kennedy and her daughter Ann Wilkins.
Although Elizabeth White was not named on the list of passengers, according to the 22 December, 1767, record of her petition for her Bounty of 100 hundred acres to the South Carolina Counsel, she was a passenger on the Earl Donegal.
Elizabeth might have been Eleanor White's daughter and John White's niece.
Parish records are being searched for Elizabeth's birth, and for the marriage of Eleanor to Johns' brother. The records of John and Ann's marriage and their children that were listed on the Earl of Donegal have been found.
It is likely that John and Ann White named their daughter Eleanor after the older Eleanor White. This is even more likely if Eleanor was married to John's brother who was killed in some battle.
Both Eleanor & Elizabeth received 100 acres (anyone over 15 was entitled to 100 acres).

According to Revolutionary Pension Application by Elizabeth White Wilkins dated 1842, she and James Wilkins were married May 16, 1769.

They named their sixth son, Hugh Bonar Wilkins, born 1784, according to Bible records included with Pension Application. My husband is a direct descendant of Hugh. Also,Wilkins land in Chester bordered Hugh Bonar.

According to the Louise K. Crowder Papers, stored at The South Caroliniana Library, in Columbia, SC, the Deed (Deed Bk. B, pp.536-39) dated 1786, wherein Wm. White sells to James Kennedy 200a of the 450a originally granted to his father John White, stipulates that: "And it is agreed that the said James Kennedy is to let James Wilkie (Wilkins) and his heirs while he lives on the plantation where he is to have the Privilege of a certain Spring." Witness: James Wilkings Et Al. This denoted to her that the Wilkins family "apparently resided on a part of the original John White land grant." James Wilkins later purchases 100a of this same land from James Kennedy. (Deed Bk. H p.265) in 1791.

In the Deed, dated Oct 20, 1770, (Deed Bk N-4 pp 18-21) in which Elizabeth White Wilkins sells her original land grant of 100a to John Morrow, James Wilkins is listed as a "planter." He receives his land grant of 100a from George III on Nov. 20, 1772, not 1770 as listed on your web site. A Memorial is filed Oct. 29, 1773. I have copies of the originals from SC Archives. Why did he receive his grant so late, since he married Elizabeth White in 1769. I can find no record that James received this land via the Bounty Act. I can find no record of him on a ship list to Charleston, though I probably do not have access to all lists before 1769.

Any help or knowledge you can give me in my quest to find the origins of James Wilkins would greatly appreciated. Sandy Wilkins

STEWART'S COMMENT: From about age 26 to about age 37 Ann Garner (possibly her maiden name) White had 6 children during the twelve year period from the first day of 1753 to the last day of 1764, an average of at least one child every two years.She was about 26 years old when her child William WHITE was born, about 29 years old when Margaret WHITE was born, about 31 years old when Margaret WHITE was born, etc. Might Ann have been the mother of Rose Stewart, who was born about 1745, when Ann was 18 years old? When Ann left Ireland, did she leave behind two children aged 18 (born about 1747) and 20 (born about 1749)? I wonder if a Presbyterian church near Broughshane might have records their births, marriages or deaths? See the above e-mail from Bob Wilkins about records of John and Ann's marriage and their children.

Elizabeth White (born 1752) received 100 acres so I assume she was aboard the Earl of Donegal even though she was not named on the list of Earl of Donegal passengers. Elizabeth White and James Wilkins were married May 16, 1769 and one of their children was named Hugh Bonar. Both John WHITE and James STEWART had grandsons named Hugh. Were they named after Hugh BONAR (born about 1749), who was listed next to Eleanor WHITE on the list of Earl of Donegal passengers?
