In 1866 John and Ann had their second known child, a boy named Patrick Airley, born in Shotton Colliery. He was to be one of the longest living of the Early men of that era, but like so many of the other Early's he suffered much throughout his life. Patrick married in 1891 in Seaham, his wife was Margaret McCann. The ceremony took place at St.Mary Magdalene's RC Church. They had many children the first of them Annie was born around 1892, followed by Lizzie, Mary, James 1900, William 1901, John and Owen. Tragically James died aged only 21 hours of Jaundice and William died at 1 1/2 years of an unknown illness. Further tragedy truck the family in 1907 when his wife Margaret fell down stairs which broke her neck resulting in her death, she was 35.
Left witb 5 children he moved to Hebburn to work in the colliery, Patrick was now the eldest living sibling, his brother Owen having been killed down the mines in 1895. I do not know how or who attended to the children during their infancy.
Annie his eldest child lived until she was well into her 90's residing in Seaham, she married into the McGann family. John known as Tramp Early died on the road of illness on his way home from Stockton on Tees, Owen is rumoured to have comitted suicide whilst living down in Hucknall, Notts. It is not known what happended to the sisters Lizzie or Mary.
When Patrick retired from the mines he moved to a small town just outside Durham City and died living in one of the aged miners homes sometime during the 2nd Worldwar. |
