Cutlery Rack for the Galley |
Seeing as keeping the cook happy always makes for pleasant cruising I decided to fabricate a teak cutlery rack to hold the assorted knives as well as the ice pick.
Material Required:
1 pc teak 2.25" x 3.5" x 8" ($9.50 at Exotic Lumber)
1 pc 3/32 teak plywood 3.5" x 12" (on hand)
Total cost of this project: $9.50
I started with a block of teak that measured 2.25 in. x 3.5 in. x 8 in. and a piece of 3/32 in. teak plywood that was cut to 3.5 in x 12 in. The various knives were measured to determine the depth of the slots which would hold them.
The block was then run through the table saw with the depth of the cuts set to match the knives. Once the 4 slots were cut, the block was sanded and the corners were all radiused.
Using a saber saw, the top radius was cut in the plywood backing plate. 2 countersunk mounting holes were also drilled in the plywood to attach it to the galley bulkhead. Next, the plywood was screwed to the back side of the teak block.
Using an extended length drill bit (1/8 in. x 7 in. long) a hole was drilled in the top of the block to accept the ice pick.
The assembly now received 6 coats of Z-Spar Captains varnish and was secured to the bulkhead beneath the galley sink and next ot the stove.
The following tools were required for this project:
1. Phillips screwdriver
2. Table saw
3. 3/8 in. electric drill
4. 1/8 in. x 7 in. drill bit
5. Saber saw
6. Small block plane
7. Finishing sander
This project took approximately 2 hours plus varnishing time to complete.
