Aims
Introduction-
Lesson 1 ,2 3, 4
Lesson 6 and 7
Students choose 2 or 3 picture books to read to Year 1 students (or any younger group). Students devise questionnaire in groups to ask to younger students about books they like.
Lesson 8
Reflect on reading and experience and results of questionnaire.
Talk on types of picture books using data projector.
Lesson 9
Construction of Picture Books. Show examples by other students. Suggest different means of construction- folding stapling. plastic binding. Look at Monsters in the Park Kit which show stages of production of Picture Book. Discuss choice of text, style, flap books, sources of images, copyright, design. Hand out task sheets. Students to have story proposal by Lesson 12.
Lesson 10
Explore various books for children with special features eg flap books, rhyme books, alphabet books, counting books.
Read some books eg By Mem Fox, Yay by Emily Rodda, Where the Wild Things Are, Chuffy the Steam Train, DR Seuss,
Faust's Party, Possum in the House, Zoo- Worksheet 4- Group work-why do these books have so much appeal? Students compare features of 3 books.
Look at graphic PB eg Tin Tin , Asterix,
Discuss how to produce images- clipart, collage, photographs, original drawings, medium etc
Lesson 11
Cathy Grant speaks on Aboriginal picture books, especially books by Aboriginal children using childish drawings to great effect. Also Alphabet books relevant to Aboriginal peoples, also flap books for Aboriginal themes. Also discuss easy and effective ways to produce illustrations.
Lesson 12
Students discuss their proposed books. Students commence Storyboard. Discuss parts of books again and storyboard. Discuss how their books will be presented. Discuss work ethic and expectations. Students complete study plan to show how they will use the next 24 lessons.
