My spiritual beliefs are eclectic, a combination of Native American, Christianity, and Eastern Philosophy. The base from which my spiritual beliefs stem is from the Native American, where there is a knowing that all things are related and spirit is in everything. This is probably where I developed a strong respect for our environment. My teacher taught me about Mother Earth, GrandMother Moon, GrandFather Sun, and Father Sky. My teacher taught me to look in each stone and see its spirit. She taught me to look into the fire and see the spirit of the standing ones (trees). She taught me to embrace the ground and feel the Earth Mothers heart beat. She taught me about the animal totems and the special "medicine"/"power" that each animal has. And she taught me so much more. I believe that our Creator created every element of our world in a delicate balance for everything to be interdependent upon each other. As we destroy these elements we destroy a part of us. With each tree that falls, with each pollutant that enters our air and our water, with each animal that dies... a part of Mother Earth becomes ill and thus we and our world suffer in her sickness. It is through advocacy and our personal choices that we can help our Mother Earth become well and regain the delicate balance. I also believe that not only do we need to preserve our Earth, but we need to preserve our people. As a few of you know, I am a very strong advocate not only for environmental causes, but social causes as well. We need to let our spirit reach out and accept and help those who are in need. |
