Field Assistant Training (FAT) Program
Research/Conservation Expeditions to Canadian Projects

Although the majority of people who sign up to Expeditions are students interested in receiving practical hands-on experience in the field of their chosen career we do take on others as well. You will join us for 10 - 14 days (ie. up to 4 months on internships) living in a wilderness environment gaining training and experience in both the theoretical and practical aspects of scientific research on flora and fauna species.
A typical field day in this program might resemble the schedule below;

General Schedule of Activities

Day Morning Afternoon
Day 1 Field Studies Flora & fauna ID techniques
Day 2 Field Studies Observational techniques; theory & methodology
Day 3 Field Studies Census techniques; theory & methodology
Day 4 Field Studies Documentary photography
Day 5 Field Studies Research writing & reporting
Day 6 Field Studies History of study site
Day 7 Field Studies Conservation Biology/Resource Management
Day 8 Field Studies Field Studies"
Day 9-12 Field Studies Write-up reports

Once you have completed your training on an Expedition as a FAT you may then apply directly to a Field Assistant position or the Level 2 FAT training course. We generally hire 1 - 2 Field Assistants per Expedition.

Benefits of training

You can contribute to The Canadian Conservationist's Journal as a writer and actually publish some of your experiences and work conducted during our programs - this is a great career builder
Participants of the Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve Bruce Trail Expeditions may contribute to the publication of field guide books by helping to write and add photographs to the project efforts.

Training and specialized education - during Expeditions you may get to meet some of the indigenous people of the areas being visited. They may show us how they live through traditional ritual dances, basket weaving lessons, fishing, medicinal plant interpretation and eating their food.
Expeditions to Nepal may provide some language lessons.
Practical hands-on field experience.
