Green Driving

The car--whether gas-wasting behemoth or the most squeking-clean compact model on the market -- is only half the environmental equation. The other half is the DRIVER.

If you want to reduce to a minimum your car's negative impact on the environment, how you drive can be as important as what you drive. These driving and handling tips can help save not only the planet but your car and perhaps your life.

Slow down!!! It's the simplest way to save energy and reduce pollution. An aggressive driving style characterized by high speeds and lots of sudden stops and accelerations drastically increase exhaust emissions and fuel use. Cutting your driving speed from 112 km/h to 80 km/h reduces fuel consumption by 30%; reducing speed also cuts nitrogen oxide emissions.

Keep your car properly tuned up and serviced to ensure maximum efficiency and minimum pollution. Despite the fact that manufacturers have designed better cars to comply with emission standards, studies have shown that Canadian cars still fail to meet them simply because they are being adequately maintained.

Fit radial tires and keep them inflated. By cutting tire drag, radials give you a 6% to 8% fuel saving. Under-inflated tires (check your owner's manual for the recommended pressure) wear out faster and cost you 4% more for fuel. Keep a tire-pressure gauge in your glove box and check the tire pressure every time you fill up at the gas station.

Avoid air conditioning, which uses CFC's and increases fuel consumption by 8% to 12%, especially in stop-and-go traffic. Use the air vents and windows instead. A folding cardboard shade for the windshield will help keep the car cooler when it's parked in the sun.

Consider car pooling as a cheaper, cleaner, energy-saving way to get to work. If you only need a car occasionally, rent one...or take a taxi.

Cover several errands in one car trip by doing some advance planning.

Drive less. Most car trips are within five to ten kilometres of the drivers home. Whenever possible walk, bike or take public transit.
