Melody Simpson [ Photo Not Available ] My artwork is based on the long standing tradition of storytelling. Many of the stories were told to me by grandparents, aunts, and uncles when I was a little girl growing up in the Acoma Pueblo. Every Piece of pottery and sculpture tells a story based on the folklore of several animal stories. I also use some traditional geometric designs to add to the stories. Most fo my work is contemporary. It is based on my own inspiration and ideas. All the design decoration, burnishing, carving and painting is done with my personal expression of my art. The pottery is hand coiled, slab coiled or cast. It is then painted and burnished (stone polished). It is fired and the finished piece is sealed with bees wax to bring out the high shine. The sculptures are hand coiled and built up. I started my work in 1987 using many of the traditional design used by my family.
By 1990, I had developed my own style. I have entered five juried shows at: I am always experimenting with my style and developing new ideas and designs. I love working with clay and seeing my imagination take form. My art is the long standing tradition of story telling, with every pottery and sculpture telling a story. I will always be telling a story even as my style changes or ideas emerge. It will be a story that reflects who I am - an American Indian from Acoma Pueblo. Symbols used to illustrate the themes:
