Travels With Charley, John Steinbeck

"When the virus of restlessness begins to take possession of a wayward man, (or woman), and the road away from Here seems broad and straight and sweet, the victim must first find in himself a good and sufficient reason for going.......this to the practical bum(s) is not difficult."

Our reason for going: Ideally, both of us wanted to quit our jobs, get rid of our apartments, and experience the freedom of unloading material possessions, financial obligations, and professional commitments, and just taking off a la Thelma and Louise.

How it really happened: Arleen got a leave without pay from her job with the promise that upon her return, she'll give up her first child for the cause of public education. Eric sold his soul to "the man" for a similar arrangement. They will be paying rent while they're away for the comfort of knowing they can return to live in their dining room turned bedroom/living room crammed with everything they own. Arleen has opened an Online banking account that she and Eric will share so that they can pay their bills on the road.

The important part: After 5 months of deliberation, penny pinching and scheming for a better plan.....we're really doing it!

Our theme song: "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap".
