Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

"We were somewhere around Barsow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded... maybe you should drive..." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was filled with what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?"

Not a whole lot like our trip (with the exception of the mescaline and amyl nitrate of course) but essential reading for anyone who hears the road calling to them. Hunter and his reluctant entourage take you for a ride to a different land, a Travels With Charlie Manson, if you will. Nevertheless, Thompson shows that this is truly the land of possibility and opportunity and he never misses an opportunity to grab life by the balls and say "you want a piece of me?"
