"We were somewhere around
Barsow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I
remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded... maybe you
should drive..." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us
and the sky was filled with what looked like huge bats, all swooping
and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a
hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was
screaming: "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn
animals?"
Not a whole lot like our trip (with the
exception of the mescaline and amyl nitrate of course) but essential
reading for anyone who hears the road calling to them. Hunter and his
reluctant entourage take you for a ride to a different land, a
Travels With Charlie
Manson, if you will. Nevertheless,
Thompson shows that this is truly the land of possibility and
opportunity and he never misses an opportunity to grab life by the
balls and say "you want a piece of me?"
