Sy'n was happy to be leaving Alabaster Weyrhold. Not because it was a bad place, but because his brother wasn't there. They'd stuck together after their parents were gone, and being so far apart was tough.
Lord Holder Engall had surprised them all with generous wages, and what to spend them all plagued everyone - except Sy'n. He had his heart set on a new drum, and a diamond ring for the girl he loved - Drikara. She'd Impressed a blue, but was still very accepting of his advances, much to Sy'n's good fortune.
That would have to wait, as going home to Ryslen was his highest priority.
Sy'n, Drikara, and W'ren all left together, the two browns and the blue spiralling upwards until they popped Between.
The watchdragon bugled them a warm welcome, and the Trio roared back in unison - a brassy roar, a vibrant trumpet, and a rumbling bass bugle.
It didn't take long for Sy'n to settle in. J'kosh and Tiyanni had assigned him to a large weyr when he was merely their drum-journeyman, and gave it back to him now.
The first thing he did was run up to the drumtower where Ryslen's drummers soundly welcomed him home.
J'kosh and Zerroith want to see us. Onaleth informed him.
I'll be right down Sy'n sent back.
No, I'll be right up. the brown returned. Sy'n grinned.
Onaleth landed carefully and waited impatiently for his rider to finish. ::Urgent, Rider. Weyrleader waits:: Onaleth drummed, using one claw on the windowframe.
The Journeymen stared. The dragon knew drummeasures!?
"I'm coming Onaleth!" Sy'n said, heading for the doorway to the rim.
"You know drums?" an apprentice asked Onaleth. The brown nodded. "Do 'dragon harper friend'"
::Dragon Harper Friend.::
::Drum boy's friend smart dragon!:: Onaleth tapped, and then Sy'n climbed up. They left the drummers standing with their mouths agape.
J'kosh stood in the bowl with another rider and a brown dragon.
That's Dulveth! Onaleth said, backwinging. Sy'n smiled as he slid down. He hugged his brother L'ran, then saluted the Weyrleader. Ahh.. it was nice to be home.
"L'ran, Sy'n..." J'kosh began, "I'm assigning you to a winglet of three. Each of you Impressed at a different weyr, and obviously, the training was different. I want you to spend the next sevenday together, learning how to function as a team."
The brownriders nodded. A green, who appeared to be, well, freckled, landed nearby, and her rider slid down, and immediately removed her riding helmet, revealing her strawberry blonde hair. "Tylar, these are L'ran and Sy'n. Riders, this is Tylar, your third." J'kosh said.
"No." Sy'n said. "I don't believe it."
"Well you'd better." J'kosh said. "I'll see you all in a sevenday."
After J'kosh was gone, Tylar looked at Sy'n like he was crazy. "Don't believe what? That your winglet third is female?" She absently toyed with her mother's pendant.
"Where did you get that?!" Sy'n demanded.
"Backoff!" Tylar snapped. "It was my mother's."
L'ran stared. "Sy'n..."
Sy'n gaped. "L'ran..."
In unison, the brothers spoke. "Tylar, what was your mother's name?"
"'lara." Tylar responded, wondering how much wine these two had had with lunch.
"And your father?" Sy'n asked.
"I have no idea." she said a bit defiant and skeptical.
"We do." they said.
"T'xonn." L'ran said.
"Tylar... we're your brothers." Sy'n said softly.
Tylar screamed, and wrapped her arms around Sy'n first, then L'ran, looking at each, realizing that Sy'n was right.
"Mama would have been so proud!" Tylar said.
"Aye, she would've been." J'kosh said. "I was at the weyr that day, Tylar, when you went back. Zerroith remembered you and Isemoth."
The three riders looked at the Weyrleader. "Will wonders never cease?" L'ran said.
Together for the first time in their lives, the three siblings learned to work together and became fast friends. Of course, this doesn't happen every day.
