The Tigers took 3 precious points against fellow promotion hopefulls Rochdale, but had to survive a late scare in doing so. Ian Goodison started after returning from international duty, as did Rob Matthews and Mark Atkins, making their debuts for City. Theodore Whitmore was on the bench. Gary Brabin drew first blood for City with a follow up header after Mike Edwards' own had powered off the underside of the bar. And Edwards himself hit a superb second before half time, chesting the ball down, turning, and hitting a lethal left footed volley in to the back of the net form the edge of the area. 2-0 at half time became 3-0 after 69 minutes. The brilliant Edwards was again in the thick of it: Dave Bayliss climed all over him in the area as he attempted to reach a high cross and the referee awarded a penalty, which was cooly slotted in by Rodney Rowe. But the turnaround came about 4 minutes later when Bayliss made amends by heading home to pull one back for Dale. And nerves were in abundance when Paul Connor tapped the ball over the line after a superb run by Clive Platt culminated in him hitting the ball off the inside of the post. Indeed, Rochdale nearly got a draw but for Paul Musselwhite racing out of his area and tackling a Dale player as they both reached for the ball. The challenge left both men down and the referee had to stop play. This extremely important win propells us up to 7th place. The play-offs are in sight, but hard work is still to be done, and let's hope the team are up to it. On tonight's evidence, they are. |
