Pvt. Enoch England Pension Papers


Pension Application, dated Sep. 4, 1888:
Enoch England appeared, a resident of Gypsy, Magoffin Co. KY, states that he was discharged at Camp Nelson on March 25, 1865; his age is 57, while in service at Booneville he incurred heart disease.
Witnessed by Morgan Wireman and Samuel carpenter, both of Gypsy, KY.

Nov. 13, 1888:
Enoch England states he enlisted as Private in Co. I, 14th KY Vol. Cav. and also in Three Forks KY Guards from Fall 1864 to spring 1865, commanded by Capt. Thomas Amis.

Jan. 7, 1889:
Enoch England, a Private in Co. I, 14th regt. KY Cavalry Vols. enrolled Dec. 25, 1862 at Breathitt Co. KY for one year and was reported present upon the company muster-in roll 13 Feb 1863, Irvin, KY to Apr. 30, 1863, next on file, and 31 Aug, 1863 four months muster; last muster & pay roll on file present; on Company muster-out roll, Camp Nelson, KY, 24 Mar 1864 reports him present and mustered out said date.

Sep. 1863-Jan. 1864: last on file, not reported absent
Except for Co. K there are no books of organization on file, no evidence of disability.
Note: He received two spurs and starps, carbine socket, saddle bags and curry comb.
The Three Forks Battalion KY Guards was a State organization, the records of which are not on file in this office.

Jan. 3, 1890:
Wm. Howard, age 40, postoffice Gypsy, Magoffin Co. KY, states he is a farmer and mechanic and that Enoch England is a farmer and that he became acquainted with him in 1869 from that time to the present has resided within one half miles of claimant, has seen him on an average of once per month during each and every year since 1869 and has worked with him at different times. From first acquaintance, claimant has suffered from heart disease, had palpitations of the heart and shortness of breath and has suffered from this disability since 1869, he has been unable to perform more than one-third of the labor of an able bodied man and has lost one half of his time from work.

Feb. 3, 1890:
Morgan Wireman, age 48, resident of Gypsy, Magoffin Co. KY states that he is a merchant and farmer by occupation, claimant is a farmer, has been acquainted with him since 1868 and from that time to presnt, has resided within one half to four miles of him, has seen him on an average four to five times a month during each and every year. When first acquainted with claimant he was suffering from heart disease, exertion upset him making him weak and his breathing difficult. He had weakness in pit of stomach and has continuously suffered from 1868 to present. He knows these facts because claimant has worked for affiant since 1868.

Feb. 25, 1890:
Thomas Collins, age 42, resident of Letcher Co. KY, post office Rockhouse, KY, states that he has known Enoch England since 1858, and from his discharge to present has resided within two miles of him, has seen him about twice amonth and worked with him in 1865. Since his return from the army he has suffered from heart disease, he knows the facts by reason of a long acquaintance with the claimant, from residing near him, seeing him frequently, feeling his heart beat, visiting him when confined to his bed, hearing physicians say he could not be cured, from hearing him complain and from general knowledge and observation.

July 27, 1890:
Enoch England, age 59, states he sufferes from partial disability from heart disease and piles, also states he applied for pension in 1877. Isaiah Salyer and Boon Salyer, both residing at Gypsy, KY, state they have been acquainted with Enoch England fore 15 years and 10 years respectively and that he is the person he represents himself to be.

Feb. 28, 1907:
Enoch England, age 76, resident of Ordway in Magoffin Co. KY states he served 12 months and re-enlisted, serving one month. His personal description at enlistment was as follows: height 5ft. 11 in; complexion dark; eyes black; hair black; born August 30 1830 at or in Scott Co. VA. His residence after leaving the service was as follows: Estill Co. KY and removed to Letcher Co. KY then moved to Magoffin Co. KY in the year 1868. His present post office is Ordway, KY in Magoffin Co. KY.

Widows Pension
March 15, 1909:
Malindy England, age 63 years, states she is the widow of Enoch England who served in the War of the Rebellion, and departed this life on the 15th day of Feb. 1909; she was married under the name of Malindy Helton to Enoch England, by Sam Allen at the home of Abe Miller. She had not been previously married, her husband's first wife died 27 Feb. 1883. She appointed William Dingus, Prestonsburg, KY, her attorney. Henry Stephens, resident of Gooloe, Floyd Co. KY and William Sturgill, resident of Gooloe, KY certify they were present and say Malindy England signed pension application.

Aug. 29, 1910:
Malindy England recived notice she was to receive widow's pension beginning March 24, 1909 and to continue during her widowhood.

Jul 28, 1921:
Dollie Allen appeared, age 36, resident of Magoffin Co. KY, asks for reimbursement for last sickness and burial of Malindy England, widow of Enoch England. Malindy England died Jun. 12, 1921, Ordway, KY, of tuberculosis, her last sickness dated from the last of May 1921; she was helpless for six years. Dollie Allen, Ellen Hale and Pokie Hale nursed her during her last sickness. R. B. Allen of Ordway, KY and Alfred Owns of Fredville, KY state information is true.
