DREADNAUGHT

Starring

Yuen Biao

Leung Kar Yan

Yuen Hsin Yee

Directed by YUEN WOO PING

Synopsis

A psycho killer, the White Tiger is on the loose, Mousey (Yuen Biao) is a wimp and Tam King has a grudge against Wong Fei Hung. All this and more in Dreadnaught!

Cast

The Star is Yuen Biao, the Dragon that got left behind and he is on top form as the wimp, Mousey. Yuen Hsin Yee plays the psycho White Tiger and as a result doesn't get to show much of his top class fighting skills, except with some flying sleeves (check out his finest movie: Dance of the Drunk Mantis, to see what this guy can really do). A clean shaven 'Beardy', Leung Kar Yan shows his remarkable imitating skills again while Kwan Tak Hing, although clearly doubled for some more acrobatic movements shows what a little bit of ginseng every morning will do for you when you reach your 70s.

Filmographies

Trailer

Four additional Trailers

Picture

Fully widescreen at 2:35 to 1, the picture quality is excellent. The print used has a few nicks and scratches but nothing compared to the some of the other HK prints used for DVDS (e.g.- Project A 2). Clear and sharp with no signs of artifacting or ghosting - A sure-fire winner! The English subtitles have the usual syntax and speelling error. They should hire someone to do a better job. (Hire me!)

Most silliest subtitle: "Master Huang let's have a toss".

(What is supposed to have been written is 'Master Huang, let's have a toast'). Hehe.

Audio

I watched the dvd on a system without a dolby 5.1 system so i'm afraid I can't clarify whether the dvd has a 5.1 mix. Anyhow the audio is in synch and sounds pretty good. As a traditional kung fu film, the sound isn't dynamic nor does it contribute anything much except for the noises when fists strike. The dvd is adequate, about as good as it good be I would guess. No English dub but that's no big loss since it's crap.

Extras

The Trailer is a nice addition since it includes all those ridiculous phrases popping up. The additional trailers are all Yuen Biao orientated - Iceman Cometh, Zu warriors (which features behind the scenes footage!!), Knockabout (which as with Dreadnaught and Magnificent Butcher looks to be in superb quality) and lastly Eastern Condors which features a host of scenes not in the finished film !! (scenes where Samo and co are in prison, playing basketball, fighting in the canteen etc...).

Overall

A great disc. Now I can finally erase my piss-poor VHS copy. Buy it now!!!!
