DR WAI IN 'THE SCRIPTURES WITH NO WORDS'
Synopsis
Jet Li turns into Indiana Jones with a bit of James Bond thrown in for good measure.
Trivia
Two versions of the film exist. The HK print features a plot, which goes back and forth from Jet the writer in modern day Hong Kong to the physical happenings of Jet's story. The International print abandons the Jet the writer plot and is set only in the confides of Jet's story
THE DVD
Released by Eastern Heroes

Extras : Trailer, Dr Wai Still Gallery, Extra Scenes from the International version, Bios, 15 chapter selection
Picture
Picture quality is average - a bit soft, colours are dull and tend to bleed at times too. The quality of the original print is ok - certainly not perfect but only a few scratches from time to time. The box says the picture is widescreen at 2:35 un-matted, but it's more like 2:1, especially since some of the names in the credits at the beginning and end are chopped off. Does anyone know what un-matted means? Does it mean that they're not lying about the widescreen ratio on the box? Ridiculously the subtitles have been remastered electronically but aren't removable.
Sound
Cantonese Language only
Sound wise, it's not too bad though it does seem to echo at times. There's no sound info on the box so I'm assuming it's mono 2.0. It certainly doesn't sound like a Dolby 5.0 mix that's for sure...
Extras
The extras are probably the saving grace of the DVD. The usual standard fare of scene selection, bios and trailer are there plus the addition of a nice still gallery of 12 pictures from the film. The bonus scenes from the International version are selected individually and are only available in English language, with no subtitles. Funnily (or should that be stupidly?) enough the scenes are in their original widescreen ratio of 2:35 to 1.
Overall
The DVD is one of four released by Eastern Heroes and unfortunately it's just average. You may think I'm being harsh but I was very disappointed that the full International version of Dr Wei was included as stated on the pre-release advertisements. I haven't seen the Mei Ah DVD of this film so I can't compare the two but this DVD is worth getting if you're a fan of the film and aren't too fussy about quality. Hell buy it and then take it back if you're disappointed. The customer is always right after all!
