Shape memory alloys are useful in household appliances because of their inherent thermal and mechanical properties. The Emide water kettle displayed, contains a Shape Memory Spring placed in the steam path of the kettle. When the water begins to boil, this spring activates and switches off the electrical current.
The Shape Memory Spring is placed in the top region of the kettle handle. As the water begins to boil and produce steam, the spring will
exceed 90°C. The change in temperature will cause the spring to mechanically shut off the electrical switch.
