BRIT AWARDS 2003 with Mastercard Robbie Williams - The Great Escape ROBBIE WILLIAMS HAS PULLED SUCCESS OUT OF THE BAG ONCE AGAIN. A FIFTH MAGIC TOUCH ALBUM, ENTITLED ESCAPOLOGY, WENT STRAIGHT TO UK NO.1 UPON ITS RELEASE IN NOVEMBER. SETTLING IN FOR THE WINTER, IT NESTED ATOP THE CHART IN THE RUN UP TO CHRISTMAS LIKE A QUADRUPLE PLATINUM STAR-STROKE-ANGEL ON THE POP TREE, AND REFUSED TO COME DOWN UNTIL ALMOST THE TWELFTH NIGHT. So it's amazing to think that Escaplogy almost didn't get made. 2001 proved gruelling for Robbie as he fought against the twin pressures of fame and working flat-out, and this time last year saw the singer take showbiz sabbatical, holed up in L.A., feeling bedraggled and blue "If you look back through your rock'n'roll history books, people tend to feel a bit crap about themselves if they work themselves into the ground. So I was going to kill off this character I'd created, join a band, do something completely different." But instead he sat in the sun, enjoying the rest. "I'm lucky," he says, "I don't live in America, but when it's cold I can go and then come back. Nobody knows who I am. I'm Rob and I can walk around and I can go to the cinema and do everyday things... but in nicer cars!" At home, there are the tabloids to deal with and the people who stare, who sometimes get under his skin. "You become a cartoon. A lot of the time I think people are in a mood with me or hate me, when they're really shy of me. I forget I'm Robbie Williams and I'm really famous. It's all just an illusion," he says Taking stock proved a valuable exercise for Robbie, and now he enjoys the best of both worlds. "With time off, a few early nights, some square meals, and a great album I decided to ditch the plans and stay being me," he smiles. "And I'm really enjoying it. I've escaped from killing something off that I enjoy." And so Escapology was created, and he admits that he suprised himself by enjoying the recording side of things. "You know, I've never enjoyed the process of recording. But the Swing...album changed all that because it was just amazing. I thought, 'It's just a shame that recording my own material can't be this fun'." But Robbie found a way to make the Escapology experience fun. "In the vocal booth I often record naked. You should try it. It's very free-ing!" With the album recorded, Stoke's favourite son bought his year to an end by signing one of the biggest British record deal in hisotry with tried and tested partners, EMI. It also ensures the fans are kept happy for more years to come, with the next of his crowd-pleasing feats - a Murryfield stadium show plus three nights at Knebworth - to come in summer. "Touring is the ultimate adrenaline rush," says Robbie. "I'm really excited at the prospect of being on the road." In fact, Europe's biggest venues are set to play host to the high- jinx over 15 fantastic nights. Of course, the BRITs 2003 wouldn't be the same wihtout a nomination nod or two to Mr Williams. With twelve years in the business behind him, he's so far nipped home with nine solo gongs, plus four more with Take That. So who knows what comes next? With every rick, joke and turn of his career, Robbie's managed to conjure up something new. As long as he does, audiences with clamour for more. How does he do it? Well, he's king of his craft.
