Zoe woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of hers and
Twinsen’s baby girl crying. She nudged Twinsen and whispered in his
ear.
"It’s your turn, go on." Twinsen sat up slowly and trudged out over to
the nursery where Chloe was standing holding onto the rail. Twinsen lifted
her gently out of the cot and starting bouncing up and down to calm her
down. Slowly Chloe stopped crying and brought it down to an occasional
whimper. Twinsen and Zoe still lived in the same house that they loved,
even though Twinsen was now rich enough to buy one twice the size. Lots of
people had raised collections for their hero. The wizards and the School
of Magic had done so too. He cast his eyes around the room. Tritons Horn
was hanging off a hook on a wall with all off his other special things,
like the Laser Pistol. The Sabre of Dr. Funfrock which he had picked up
the first time he saved Twinsun rested in a special place on the bookshelf
in full view. Without him noticing Chloe had rested her tiny head against
her famous father’s shoulder. Ever so gently he placed her back into her
cot and covered the blankets over her.
Suddenly he heard a rattle on the window. He glanced across his
shoulder but could see nothing. He felt nothing of it and trudged back in
the direction of the bed. He watched the door knob being turned and heard
a grunt as somebody put their weight against the lock. So as not to
startle Zoe he quietly reached for a tee-shirt and pulled it over his
head. He crept to the door and reached for the set of keys on the ledge
nearby. Holding them together so they wouldn’t clang he silently pulled
out the front door key and put it into the lock. Slowly turning it his
heart was pounding away, he turned until he felt a soft. . .click. He
grasped the door knob with his left hand and after he regained his
composure quickly turned it, pulled open the door and punched out with his
right hand. He looked around but couldn’t see anyone. A shadow fell across
him, blocking the moonlight. A big hand, with a leather glove caught him
round the throat, the other hand following in around the eyes. The
attacker pulled Twinsen to the ground silently, flicked a knife out of his
belt and held it across his victim’s neck.
"Make one false move, or say a single word and you won’t live to regret
it," the attacker whispered menacingly down Twinsen’s ear. "Right lads,
move in and what ever you do, be quiet." Over the bank on the right of the
house three other men dressed in black moved into the house, with guns
held at chest height. Zoe screamed without thinking and one of the men
panicked.
"Shut up," he shouted, "or I’ll put a hole in your head." Zoe threw her
hands in the air. The men worked quickly getting Zoe under control. They
took the crying baby from the cot and stealthily left. The three
kidnappers rushed past their leader with the captives. The leader took a
gun from one of them and using the butt of it as a club he smashed it
across the back of Twinsen’s head. Twinsen fell deep down into a world of
darkness.
