And God Said: "Cool!"
A Free Adaptation of Genesis 1:1-2:3
Genesis 1:1 - 2: 3
There were no days.
There were no weeks.
There were no months.
There were no years.
Time did not yet exist.
There were no atoms.
There was no earth.
There was no sky.
There was no universe.
There was nothing because nothing existed.
There were no plants.
There were no animals.
There were no humans.
There was no life.
The only thing that did exist was God.
So, God started everything on the first day by creating the heavens and the earth. Like a lump of clay sitting
on the potter's bench, the earth was a shapeless void, waiting to be shaped and filled. Everything was dark and
covered with water, and God's Spirit moved on the surface of the water.
Since it was dark, God said 'we need some light here.' So light appeared. God saw the light, and said it was good.
Then God divided the light and the darkness He called light day, and darkness night. Day and night, morning and
evening, God called it a day, the first one.
On the second day, God saw all this water. There was water on the earth, and water above the earth, water everywhere.
So God said, 'I need to do something about this,' and the sky came into being to separate the water on the earth
from the water above the earth. God called the sky heaven, it does sound a bit better than just plain old sky now,
doesn't it? Morning and evening came, so God called it a day.
Water still covered the earth. There was no dry land yet, so, on the third day, God decided to have the water on
the earth gather themselves into pools. So God told the waters to gather themselves, and let the dry land appear.
After they finished, God called the dry land earth, and called the pools of water, seas. God saw how everything
shaped up, and said it was good.
Now, God saw the seas and the dry land, but there was still something missing, so He began to fill the earth. The
first thing he did was to tell the earth to bring forth life. This life was to be grasses and herbs, flowering
plants and fruit bearing trees. So the earth started to bring forth life. Grasses and herbs, flowers and trees
appeared. God looked around at all the earth had produced, and said it was good, then He called it a day.
God thought; 'this 'day and night' thing seems to be good, but it still needs something.' So, God placed lights
in the heavens to help divide the days and nights, and to help mark the seasons and years. All these lights helped
to give light to the earth, even during the times of darkness. God made two lights that were especially bright.
The brightest one He put in charge of the days, and the one that wasn't so bright, He put in charge of the nights.
To make the nights more beautiful, God made the stars to shine in the heavens. After doing all this, God called
it a day, the fourth one.
On the fifth day, God looked at the waters, and saw they were lifeless. So God told the water to produce life.
God wanted the waters to be filled with life, life that moved, swam and flew. So God created whales and creatures
that swam in the water, and birds that flew over the water. And the waters produced life abundantly, filling themselves
with life. And God saw all the life in the seas, and flying in the air and said they were good. Then God blessed
these creatures and told them to reproduce. (Actually, He told them to 'be fruitful and multiply,' and they did
it.) After doing all this, God called it a day.
Now God turned His attention to the dry land. It was beautiful. Filled with decorative grasses, fragrant flowers
and herbs, and dotted with lovely trees that produced fruits of all shapes, sizes and flavors. What a wonderful
paradise! But still, there was something missing. Sure, there was life, but it was stationary, it didn't move around,
it stayed put. So, God told the earth to nurture the life He was going to create, and set out to create moving
life on the earth. So, God made the creatures of the earth.
All kinds of animals; those that hunt, and those that graze, the big, and the small. The ones that creep, and the
ones that crawl. Every kind of animal there is, God made. And God looked at all the animals, and said they were
good. Something still isn't right. There's still something missing. So God said; 'what do we need?' Then God said;
'I've got it! Let's create humankind in our image. Let's put him in charge of everything we created, someone to
keep everything in order, someone to take care of things.'
So God created humankind in His image. In His image God created humankind, both male and female God created them.
So, God blessed humankind, and told them to 'be fruitful and multiply,' and they did. Then God charged humankind
with the mission of caring for His creation, and gave humankind the power to rule over all life on the earth. Not
a rule that is destructive, but one that nurtures and cares for what is in its charge.
Then God looked at the whole picture. He saw the heavens and the earth. He saw the light and the darkness, the
sun, moon and stars. He saw the earth, the life that filled the waters, the earth and the air. He saw all the beautiful
plants, their bright colours, and lovely fragrances. He looked at humankind, the ones He entrusted to care for
all the He had created. He saw everything, and saw that it was good.
Then God said 'cool!' And called it a day, the sixth one.
'Wow, what a week!' God looked around, and saw that everything was done, there wasn't anything else to create in
the heavens or the earth. Everything was made, everything was filled; all was going well, so God rested on the
seventh day. So God, taking a break, blessed the day that He rested on. So, the seventh day became sanctified because
that was the day God rested after creating the earth.
