Problems I
  1. 4.8 pounds (lb) to milligrams (mg)
  2. 40o Fahrenheit to degrees Celsius (oC)
  3. The density of a liquid is 1.20 g/ml. Calculate the volume in liters occupied by 10.0 grams
  4. What is the acceleration of an object whose mass is 5 kilograms when a net force of 100 N acts on it?
  5. A 60 grams tennis ball approaches a racket at 15 m/sec, is in contact with the racket for 0.005 sec, and then rebounds at 20 m/sec. Find the average force that the racket exerted on the ball.
  6. The brakes of a 1000 kg car exerts 3000 N. How long will it take the car to come to a stop from a velocity of 30 m/sec?
  7. How much mass is converted to energy per day in a nuclear power plant operated at a level of 100 megawatts?
  8. At her highest point, a girl on a swing is 7 ft above the ground. And at her lowest point, she is 3 ft above the ground. What is her maximum velocity?
  9. A horse has a power output of 1 hp when it pulls a wagon with a force of 300 N. What is the wagon's velocity?
  10. A skier wishes to build a rope tow to pull herself up a ski hill that is inclined at 15o with the horizontal. Calculate the tension needed on the rope to give the skier's 54 kg. body (including the skis on which she stands) a 1.2 m/sec2 acceleration. Ignore the friction.
  11. A force of 100 kg acting horizontally to the right, is to be combined with one of 50 kg acting upward and to the right at an angle of 15o with the vertical. Solve for the angle q between the resultant force R and the 100 kg. force.
  12. The thrust of a rocket is the force developed by the expulsion of exhaust gases. Find the thrust of the rocket that uses 30 kg/sec of fuel and whose exhaust gases leaves the rocket at 3 km/sec.
  13. A 5 kg rifle fires a 15 gram bullet at a muzzle velocity of 600 m/sec. Find the recoil velocity of the rifle?
  14. A 0.5 kg snowball moving at 20 m/sec strikes and sticks to a 70 kg man standing on the frictionless surface of a frozen pond. What is the man's final velocity?
  15. A lantern held by a submerged skin diver directs a beam of light at the surface of lake at an angle of incidence of 40o. Find the angle of refraction.
