Henrietta King is the eldest of the King family. Once Alec was describing her to his children and remembering how fun she was in her youth. One of the children asks what happened to her and Alec replies, "Our mother died." I think that goes a long way to explaining Hetty's character. She had to take on the role of mother at a very young age and it changed her.
