Anne's most romantice gesture--Her book dedication included Gilbert.
At the farewell picnic for the teacher Josie Pye dares Anne to walk the ridge pole of the Spurgen kitchen roof. When Anne falls and sprains her ankle, Gilbert helps her up and offers a ride home, but she refuses because of her pride.
Diana and Anne attend a Christmas Ball and Anne tells Diana that she can get Gilbert to do anything she wants. Anne tries to speak to Gilbert, but he ignores her and makes a point of speaking to Diana then he walks away. Anne and Diana dance and Gilbert steals Anne's dance card.
All the while Gilbert is in love with Anne. Sometimes he follows Anne and Diana. He wishes her luck on the Queen's College entrance exam. When Anne's boat sinks and she is forced to hold onto the bridge, he rows up and rescues her. He tells her they have tied for first on the exams and sweetly says he's just sorry she had to share first with him. He tries to make up with her, but she rushes off.
Gilbert gives Anne a ride home from town and gets her to agree to let him take her to the recital at the White Sands. She ends up not going with him due to Marilla's reaction. But Gilbert is very proud of Anne at the recital. She tries to explain what happened but doesn't get a chance.
While they are at Queen's Anne goes to give Gilbert a note, but sees him talking with a girl and runs away tearing up the note. Signs of jealousy? Gilbert wins the gold medal and Anne the Avery scholarship.
When Anne has to give up Redmond College to teach Gilbert comes to see her. Anne is walking in a field and Gilbert rides up on a white horse. He tells her he has worked out an exchange with the trustees to give Anne the Avonlea school and he will take the Carmody school. She tries to refuse, but he won't let her. He gently touches her cheek and calls her, "Carrots," but she doesn't seem to mind this time.
