Morning Whispers
July 24, 2000

Whispers of the morning
(frolicking squirrels,
whirring cicadas,
punctuated by the honking of
geese across the sky)
Suddenly silenced.

          N
          A
          P
          !

Twigs, gnarled and brittle,
Crumbled beneath a wayfarer's feet.
Ah--it's the little boy
With the penchant for song.

Notes he warbled softly
Danced across the forest floor.
Notes he warbled sweetly,
Captivated the whispers of the morn.

Pausing by a field--
Where wind-tossed cinquefoils
Wave and smile--
The boy flung himself upon the earth.

With his blithesome face
Towards the mellow sun of dawn,
He closed his eyes and
Ceased his unhurried song.

And so it is that
The whispers of the morning
(frolicking squirrels,
whirring cicadas,
punctuated by the honking of
geese across the sky)
Resumed their converse.
