THE MALTA ECOLOGICAL SUMMIT

The Malta Ecological Summit gives an opportunity to the public, environmentalists and scholars to get together and discuss a particular ecological issue with the legislative and juridical powers of the country.

Since 1992 when the first summit was organised, both the Prime Minister of Malta and the Leader of the Opposition honoured ECO, not only with their contribution to the Summit but also with their presence.

  I MALTA ECOLOGICAL SUMMIT  1992

The I Malta Ecological Summit was organised in 1992 in Valletta, Malta.

The topics discussed included:

- Malta's International Environmental Role

- Environmental Education Animal and Bird Rights

- Land Use

- The Role of Leaders in environmental protection

  II MALTA ECOLOGICAL SUMMIT  1993

The II Malta Ecological Summit was organised in 1993 in Valletta, Malta.

The topics discussed included:

- Sustainable development

- Malta's International Environment Role

- Evaluation of "Xumiemu" - an educational campaign directed towards children

- The role of the Political Parties, the Church and the Media in the protection of the environment

  III MALTA ECOLOGICAL SUMMIT  1994

The III Malta Ecological Summit was organised in 1994, at the Suncrest Hotel in Qawra, Malta.

The theme for this Summit was more specific, namely the Role of the Local Councils.

During the previous year Malta introduced the concept of local government with 67 local councils in Malta and Gozo.

As a consequence, ECO took the opportunity to evaluate the role that such councils were fulfilling to protect the environment.

Another objective of this summit was to brainstorm possible solutions to problems which were common among neighbouring councils.

As a result of this summit, various councils started meeting on a regional level to sort out problems which afflicted the councils concerned and common solutions were sought.

This summit saw the participation of practically all the 67 Local Councils of Malta and Gozo, totalling 150 councillors.

  IV MALTA ECOLOGICAL SUMMIT  1996

The IV Malta Ecological Summit was organised in 1996 at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza, Sliema, Malta.

Once again, the theme was very specific:

Environmental Education for the next millenium and the "oneworld" educational pack was launched. All educationalists were invited to attend. A full capacity attendence of 150 participants was reached.

  V MALTA ECOLOGICAL SUMMIT  1999

ECO plans to organise the V Ecological Summit this year.

It will consist of the publication of a book which will include practical tips of what people can do to improve their way of life and the environment.

This book will be a follow up to the 4th summit where participants had suggested that in Malta there existed a vacuum for such an initiative.

A one day seminar will then be organised to launch the book and the general public will be invited to attend because in one way or another everyone will be able to benefit and comment.

In fact four aspects of daily life will be covered:

1. the home

2. the workplace

3. the school

4. the local council
