Caveat Emptor - Let the Buyer Beware!

Avoid patronizing the following businesses!

Sodexho

Monopoly Power

Sodexho operates as a near monopoly provider of food services on the UMass / Boston campus

Unhealthful Food

Sodexho ignores the food pyramid leaving customers a poor choice.

For more information see The Food Pyramid Guide "which illustrates the research-based food guidance system developed by USDA and supported by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)."

Even though the cafeteria is open for dinner, they closed the salad bar at 3 PM. Well, whoever heard of a lunch salad and not a dinner salad?

They lost a customer...

Poor Customer Service

When the poor customer service was brought to the attention of Sodexho managers, the response was, "Well, then bring a bag lunch."

Thanks for the suggestion.

Urban Campus Agglomeration Economies

When it was first proposed that UMass / Boston move from a downtown location to the outskirts of Harbor Point (Columbia Point), a faculty member being interviewed by a TV news reporter objected stating, "But there are so many more places to eat around here."

The clustering of businesses in an urban area has spillover effects or externalities. Similar to economies of scale, where increases in the volume of production lowers the per unit cost, economies of agglomeration decrease per unit cost by spreading fixed costs over a larger market.

I, (and you), will patronize Wit's End on the 3rd floor of Wheatley,
or take a short ride to Shaws aka Star on Morrissey Blvd (they have a nice salad bar and food to go),
or try Harbor Point Pizza & Cafe at 27 Harbor Point Boulevard, 617-288-3587, (the spinach pizza is rather tasty).

For additional restaurants, try Pick a Restaurant or Dining in Massachusetts in Dorchester, a neighborhood of Boston, or Dine Site dot com for Boston.
